poor starting

hi, so i was wondering if anyone can help, my octavia 1998 sometimes and it doesnt depend on if the car has been running previous or not but as it starts, fires up well then immediatly dies, this can happen several times until it fires up and keeps going, has anyone experienced this before and can give me any tips, thanks.

And which engine as well as which fuel. Knowing it's a 1998 we can rule out the PD130, 2.0l diesels and 1.8T180.

Mine does that if the chip in the key doesn't turn of the imobilzer. You need to insert it more slowly and wait a second or so before starting. I only came to this conclusion because it never happens to my wife who is slower than me.

Could be why I've never experienced this; I always wait for the first of the 2 seatbelt lights to extinguish before turning the engine over.

i used to live next to a guy with a 1.8 Passat, and it did this every day! drove me mad!

Or it could be a faulty ECU/Power relay (109/428/469)
