Squeaky window

Featured Replies

Hello all. I hope this isn't too much of a stupid question but since I bought my fabia I have had a problem with the drivers window squeaking when it opens.

Is this as simple as putting some wd40 down the side of the glass or is that the wrong way to sort it?

Any advice appreciated.

I would not use WD40 , it will cause a permanent smear on the glass ,because it is oil based. I would try washing up liquid.

I wouldn't try either of those methods, get it back in the dealer to fix correctly. My Octy 2 does the same, dealer has lubed it up several times, great for the first couple of days, then the squeak returns. Can't see out of the effing window either, due to all the grease smears. Health and safety issue this, I have reported to Skoda UK and have been advised to take my car into the dealer.

Guys, the best thing to use is pure silicon spray lubricant. It's safe and non reactive (inert) with rubber (read the instructions first though to make sure you have the right product) and just doesn't hurt anything. It also doesn't dry out. You can buy it from most good engineering, diy shops, upvc double glazing repair shops, or motor accessory shops. To apply it, just open fully the window concerned. Next spray some onto your finger taking care not to breath in the vapour as although it's an inert and harmless substance in it's self, it's not good for your lungs (like any aerosol product). Next carefully smear the silicon lubricant well into the rubber surround area each side of where the window runs in the rubber. This will instantly solve your squeak and last for ages. It's not messy either. Incidentely, this is the same stuff you should use on your door seals in winter to prevent freezing between the door and rubber seals. It works!

A product that might help is Tesco Tyre & Bumper Restorer, @ £2.

Spray at the seal with the window down, then clean the glass afterwords.

It is harmless and good for window seals, door seals etc and for winter time to stop doors freezing closed.

Not as good as silicone spray, but a nice smell.

(that is Silicone not silicon)

Yeah...spelling not my strong point today (or any day!). George, are you a GT85 fan...that smells great!

Only on Push Bikes and Motorbikes,

removing and putting on new handlebar grips is a good use for it, & removing Sticker glue.

I like proper Chain Maintenance Spray as a lube and proper Release Oil or sprays.

Dry Chain Coatings/waxes are good.

(& WD 40 is jack all trades and master of non  Water Dispersant & is the spawn of the devil for stripping oil and grease & protective coatings from stuff and encouraging corrosion.)

In short nothing, totally incompetent. Wouldn't trust with a wheelbarrow.
