Hi all,

have a quick question about microsoft windows

i have on my server a setup of folders with varying drawing information in them. but the top level folder has nothing in it except another folder which contains all the information. is there a way to remove the top level folder without deleting the 2nd level folder and its contents?

basically i want to remove level one folder without deleting its contents(ie folder 2)

if that makes sense :D

can it be done?

cheers all:confused:

Can you not just go in to the folder with the content in windows explorer, cut all the content, go up one level, paste, then remove the now empty redundant folder?

ie you have

folder/subfolder/content/files

go in to subfolder and cut content

go up one level in to folder, and paste

now you should have

folder/content/files

and

folder/subfolder

now just remove subfolder.

Confused? You will be.....

I think that if you're doing a move (cut rather than copy) to the same drive, it'll be quick as it leaves the content where it is and just updates the directories (folders)

I've just tried on my laptop and it moved ~1.75Gb (~1900 files) instantly

Moved to The Tech Shed, as I can't quite figure out what this has to do with cars!

HTH ;)

Hear hear, and I agree; if you're moving data on a single logical volume, all Windoze does (well should do anyway) is re-write the FAT entries.

With that much data, moving might be risky -too much perhapsfor the recycle bin if a mistake happens .In that sort of case I alwayscopy ,even if it means doing it overnight .The time spent waiting is IMHO far less than time spent trying to re creat data .

just my 2d (being a bit olde worlde of course )
