Which tyres

Featured Replies

Hi, i've got vrs 1 with vrs alloys, i need new front tyres, i would like to buy 225/45 would it be okey for the vrs alloys or should i rather buy 205/50 as before?thanx for any answers, mark

Stick with the right size, lowering the profile will affect the speedo reading.

Plenty of people on here use 225/45. It won't effect your speedo as the difference in the wall height is about 0.5mm and they are cheaper usually, hence the reason they are popular

if replacing all 4 go for 225 otherwise stick with what you've got, you lower the profile which is a percentage of the width so your not affecting the rolling radius really at all.

and eagle F1 assymetric's are imo the best tyres ive ever used!

edit just realized i make no sense!!!

the profile 225/45/17 relates to a percentage of the width IIRC so when widening the tyre the lower the profile number to keep the same rolling radius.

thanx, i am thinking of buying barum bravuris and yes 225/45 are 20 quid cheaper and look better :)

Just did the maths 205/50 = tyre wall 102.5mm and 225/45 = 101.25mm. Not going to make any noticable difference in speedo readings

That is on about increasing wheel size not tyre width. I run 225's on 18" wheels so I have to go 40 profile on 17's you have to go 45 as a 40 would be too small rolling radius

Agreed but the post was aimed at RichB86.:)

It's fine to use 225/45/17's on the car as iirc they fitted them on a few cars from the factory at some point, though I may have dremt this bit

Going from 205/50/17 too 225/45/17 makes your tyres diameter 3mm smaller which eqautes to 0.47% difference which as your link points out is well within the the recommended 2.5% limit.

I have far too much time on my hands lately so I'm answering lots :D

I wouldn't consider Barums again. On my last car I changed them for Toyo Proxes (and the cooking version, not the T1), and suddenly it was like the front end was painted to the road!! So much so that I actually had oversteer when the rear Vredsteins reached their limit and I still had front grip to spare.

Do they even make Eagle F1's in 205/50/17, ive been looking but maybe not hard enough. Plus they dont state that size on their website...

EDIT: sorry ment Eagle F1 GS-D3, not heard about the Eagle F1 Asymmetric's, wonder how they compare.

assymetric won evos tyre test which is why i use them and they are the new versions of the gsd3 i think

If you use The Wheel & Tyre Bible tyre size calculator below, it will give you an indication of how much the speedo will underread or overread. The first page is also well worth reading.

I tried to get GS-D3's in 205/50/17 could'nt get them anywhere in that size!

After searching yea the Asymmetric's were brought out to replace the GS-D3's. Still not sure on the size though, but i'd stick them on the front. =-)

if your going to put wider ones on i think legally you have to put them on the back.

Kumho KU31's. pretty impressed and relatively cheap (£80 per boot).

Get good reviews on here.

Go for the 225. The extra grip will be nice;-) the Dunlop Sp Sport MAXX are pretty savage! Not cheap though...here in Paddyland there €175! Im sure ye brits can get them for half that.....
