Bounty for cars over 9 years old to buy new "environmentally friendly" one

Featured Replies

If it keeps car factories open , people in work at the component suppliers and dealers and all the associated jobs then that's going to mean far less expense than it would be to lose all those jobs (and tax income) and pay them all benefits.

I'm not sure it would make all that much difference in practice though , as people running cars that old may not be able to buy a new vehicle and those who will take advantage are going to be people who were going to buy a new car anyway and just bought an old shed on ebay to get the £2.5k allowance

Hmmmm never thought of that, what a devious mind you have ( that's a compliment by the way):D

I think in Germany , old cars that do not have a catalyst fitted are banned from the autobahns?

Really? That surprises me (not saying it's untrue though) as the classic car movement is big over there.

Well It wasnt a reliable source that I used , Mike Brewer on the last series of Wheeler Dealers!!!! It was the one where he went to Germany for the SL.

I don't think it's a case of if, but when. We are going to get shafted sooner or later with something along the lines of this. An incentive would just be the start and it would go further. It has to. People don't seem to get some very basic facts;

1. There are too many cars on the road for the road system to be as effective as it could be

2. This is going to get worse to the point it will bring the whole lot grinding to a halt

3. Something like this has to happen, it has to change and a line has to be drawn somewhere.

4. Yes this means it will effect YOU and everyone else too

5. It's going to cost us all money and some people will be worse off than others. Deal with it or move to New Zeland

The system works well in Japan and think of the positives it would have on the various related industries.

"Classic" cars (I should imagine that will take some defining) could be exempt via a special license and it will be restricted to age, condition etc...

But this "scheme" could be something like you'll only get the full grant if you decide to buy one of these cars here

Would I want to hand my fun little Favorit to spend more on another car?

So a 10k car is about 8k if I hand my Favorit? Doesn't make a whole lot of sense especially if you still haven't got the fund for it.

I'd stick with my Favorit. I know people in the motor trade need their jobs as much as anyone else but shouldn't the manufacturers think lets cut production slowly instead of flooding the market?

If I win a Seat Leon Ecomotive just look out in Auto Trader for it!!!!!

:) My youngest car is 19 years old!

What would be the point in a classic car exemption when you've all but killed off the chance of creating more classics in 30 years time?! One rule for all or none please. The problem with the car market is snobbery mostly. People won't consider cars simply because they have 100k on the clock and are 9 years old so won't be "keeping up with the jones's". Fine with me as it means cheap cars for me. The motor industry has had it too good for many years and now Mr Average is settling for his 4 year old motor or can't get credit for a new one, so no doubt the motor industry recommended or is supporting this idea and some backhanders are being thrown about. In some countries cars that are 9 years old are worth much more than they are here. Ok that's probably partly because of something like import fees on new cars, but it shows they're valued more somewhere else.
