Bounty for cars over 9 years old to buy new "environmentally friendly" one

Featured Replies

Read a short bit in today's Daily Mail suggesting they were considering dishing out £2500 when scrapping any car over 9 years old when purchasing a new or nearly new car.

I'm quite a fan of older cars and I think the idea is rather pointless. Firstly making a new car and scrapping an old one creates more co than leaving the old one running. So if this goes ahead it's definitely not for the environmental issue. More likely it's the Government giving a golden handshake to the motor industry. No doubt the money off will just support price increases in new and nearly new cars. It would probably stagnate the used/banger end of the market. Needless to say i'm dead set against the idea. Currently only have access to the net via opera mini on my mobile so may have missed discussion on this if there already is one.

I know the Germans are doing that at the moment.

Think about how much it would cost the government, and then think about who will pay for it. Yet again it will be us the tax payer paying out for all these new for old swaps.

Not everyone who runs old bangers could afford to buy new or nearly new anyway, so there will still be a secondhand car market at the banger end.

dont the french have a law that cars over 10 years are banned from their roads? i think its a good idea as it will remove uninsured drivers etc as they only ever seem to buy bangers.

Almost worth buying a £250 scrapper prior to trade in time :P

So a car that is maybe 6 or 7 years old,low miles would then be technically worth less than one that is 15 years old has 500k on it?

Thats about right then.

No they dont, and I regularly see cars far older than that on their roads when driving over there.

So will they give me 2K for this

40 years old and worth more then the VRS

Q- looking at Moggie ,what's it not got that most (if not all cars built in the past nine years have ) - ECU.

So how would they bring in speed limiting on this one -unless they bribed folk to get rid of them .

Or don't I trust the one eyed git as far as I could throw him .:confused::confused:

I doubt older cars will be banned anytime soon during these tough times. Political suicide to force people to give up their old cars, especially considering public transport just is not an option in many areas, and because of the house prices etc a lot of people cannot actually afford to move nearer to work..

Its pretty environmentally unfriendly to make cars, producing new ones is worse than keeping older ones on the road , older cars should be encouraged if anything, cant help thinking this is being pushed by the car makers

The whole system is unfair anyhow m my E class is 8 years old this year despite being able to seat 7 people and averaging 34mpg its taxed heavily , in those 8 years i've done less than 70,000 miles but will pay the same as a Porsche driver who does 50,000 miles a year i dont see why cars like this should be taxed as high as something that can only ever seat 2 people , doesnt seem like a level playing field to me

My weekend/sunny day toy is 15 years old this year, cant see it needing to be scrapped an time soon bit like the Traveller

im sure its france, but ok must be wrong, either france or a eu country close by have some law of some kind meaning cars over £10 years old are scrapped unless its been changed in the past few years.

I don't know about the French 10 year rule, still see old DS and GS Citroens out there.I think this is another I'll thought out scheme and it would be sad if good old cars is classics are eventually forced to be scrapped. I think that would lead to the taking up of arms. All this green stuff is getting very sinister with these"advisors" talking about having only two kids and rationing flights: talk about Stalinist.Sadly the Tories will not be any different:Tim Yeo is one of the shrillest on the all party committee:he has an interest in a lekky car company...

If it keeps car factories open , people in work at the component suppliers and dealers and all the associated jobs then that's going to mean far less expense than it would be to lose all those jobs (and tax income) and pay them all benefits.

I'm not sure it would make all that much difference in practice though , as people running cars that old may not be able to buy a new vehicle and those who will take advantage are going to be people who were going to buy a new car anyway and just bought an old shed on ebay to get the £2.5k allowance

Sounds good, there is no way my car would be worth 2.5K come trade in time after 9 years, so would benefit from this, as I intend to keep my car until it is 9/10 years old.

But won't the laws of supply and demand snap in .

Not so long ago the price of bangers was such that car dealers were paying to get rid of scrappers and it was possible to pick up something that a dealer would normally have scrapped for next to nothing ,to save dealer paying out .

If an old banger is going to fetch up to £2.5k ,how long before the price of these old bangers goes up and the whole scheme becomes self defeatest :eek:

Then again ,will it stop those with no intention of registering their car as registering it makes them liable for all sortsof nasties -road tax/speeding fines etc etc .

The only beauty of this scheme is that by inflating the value of the old bangers ,it might make the illegals think twice .

I think it was just one or two city centres that old cars are banned from.

I think in Germany , old cars that do not have a catalyst fitted are banned from the autobahns?

Its the same age as me! And in better nick!

I would think there would be a requirement to have been the owner of the car for the past 12 months or something similar.

If such a scheme came in I'd have to seriously consider saying goodbye to the 328. Flog all the nice bits and change them for poverty 318 stuff (seats, wheels, trip computer etc)... to fund the change.

I think it would be a great shame if this were to be brought in. My "new" car is 7 this year and I certainly aim to keep it for a good few years yet! The other cars at my household are 6 years old, and 2 cars at 12 years old! Like someone else mentioned - with the advent of ECU's now causing havoc they would be no come back with something like this so there is no escape from the dreaded engine light!

Can't see this happening and I'd be amazed if they could enforce it - it's environmentally unsound as suggested for a start and is forcing people into expediture that is not necessary. Certainly I'd be very unhappy about not being able to use my MX5 which is 14 years old now but only has 65,000 miles on the clock

Its never going to be illegal to run an older car.

I think the idea is that if people are thinking about a new car but holding back due to the climate, it might just tempt them into doing a deal after all. :)

Just another think tank fudge moment I think

To this government :finger:

To think tanks :finger:

It will be a cold day in Hell before these idiots have a bright idea.

Are people reading a different news story to me?

Why do you all seem to think that it's saying that cars over 9 years old will be banned?

It's an incentive scheme to help people replace older cars with new ones. That's all.
