Throttle Body Problems

Featured Replies

The other day, my octy gave up the ghost and barely limped home.

Got the following fault codes

17987 - Throttle Actuator (J338): Adaptation Not Started

P1579 - 35-00 - -

17579 - Angle Sensor 2 for Throttle Actuator (G188) Implausible Signal

P1171 - 35-00 - -

17950 - Angle Sensor 1 for Throttle Actuator (G187): Implausible Signal

P1542 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent

Dealer cleaned up the TB, injectors and sparkplugs but reports that the car still jerks. No fault codes are apparent.

Any pointers to what could be wrong. They are proposing a new TB which costs mega bucks

I wonder if the fault could be with the throttle pedal instead? Just a guess though.

Probably cheaper than a new TB!!

as they obviously read the codes, have they tried doing a throttle body adaptation/reset? did they clean TB before or after those codes were read? when they did the TB clean did they disconnect the plug?

They cleaned the TB, changed the coil packs. Car runs okay but jerks at lower speeds. They say that a new TB needs to be ordered. I am reluctant and taking back the car. Can't beleive a TB will conk out at 30000km

if you know anyone with vag-com get them to do a throttle body reset.

:iagree: always worth trying first. If it's not alligned it can run like crap

Got the car back. It drives well except for being lumpy at less that 1500 rpm. TB was aligned. They recommned changing the throttle body and coil packs. I might consider the latter. Plugs and TB were changed and hoses checked for leaks.

Repreive for now!

I got the same 2 codes 17579 and 17950 2 days ago. The EPC light would come on and then if I floored the gas pedal the RPM would not rise above 1700. Switch off the engine, restart and pedal response and car was normal. The dealer cleaned and reset the throttle body, injectors and ALSO rest the ECU(?) The car is driving ok now. But I am still left wondering what caused the problem.

Throttle body out of alignment i'd expect.

There you are, Lummox. I was waiting for gurus like you and Stu to respond. Honestly, if you were to open an independent service centre in India, you would make the Skoda dealers howl for mercy. Now thats a gleeful thought! Tell me, how does the Throttle body get out of alignment? Am I doing something wrong? or is this a normal reset after running 37K kms. Thanks. Bomi.

Strangely enough, my car has smoothened out. I think the TB was dirty, I added a petrol additivie to clean the fuel line which must have dumped muck into the TB which was cleaned. I did a reset and it seems to be okay since. Slight uneven idle. Maybe coil packs have reached half life!

Strangely enough, I am getting the code 17579 but only when engine is cold. When the car and weather heats up and I have deleted the code it is fine.

Sounds like a connection problem IMHO, any thoughts?

Could be a connection problem in the plug between the wiring loom and the throttle body itself. If you remove it (you will need to reset the throttle body with VAG-Com after), check the connections are all ok and put a little silicon di-electric grease in the female connectors.

To continue further, the same thing happened again, a year later, got the throttle body cleaned. Problem persisted - additionally, the engine would hunt on idle. At higher RPM's there was not problem.

Took car back from dealer. Reset codes, adapted the TB and it was okay but the EPC light would pop up occasionally so repeated this. Early last month, I needed to take the car on a 1500km round trip. Prior to that, a gang of us went on a 250 km drive on some good roads and the car held up on spirited driving. Proceeded on our trip down south. Car behaved impeccably. Reached our destination which has high humidity and ambient temperature is 39 C (as opposed to normally 33-34C). Next day, hosed the car down, went out to awedding reception in the evening, the humidity was killing and the dreaded light came on. Limped home.

Next day, ran the diagnostics. It all pointed to the TB. I merely removed the plug, blew into it. Replaced and all was fine. Car behaved impeccably and returned without any event

One month, on, yesterday, after a heavy rain and 28C, On my way to work, i found the idling a little rough and a bit of a jerk when the turbo engaged. No warning lights. After work, started her up and the EPC light came on. Switched off and switched on. EPC light was off, car was lumpy, but the fuel consumption indicator was showing 45l/100lm (normally 12l or 25l when cold). Car was pretty tiresome and I found the brake servo was not performing well at low speeds so had a hand on the handbrake. Suddenly, after 10km, the car suddenly perked up and was normal. Reached home and a series of code. The Throttle body and also the lamba sensor. I rashly deleted the codes.

Car is fine today. Am just wondering whether the MAF is causing the throttle body to play up or it is a bith of both. Note humidity seems to play a role in all this.
