Glovebox rattle of doom!

Featured Replies

I thought my poor Octavia was falling to bits but it turns out its the glovebox mechanism. I've emptied it just to make sure it wasn't the contents making a noise but its actually the closing mechanism.

Sounds like loose bits of plastic and stuff rattling around and its driving me insane. Strangely the mechanism and lock all work fine still.

Any ideas before I rip all my hair out! Thanks!

Mine does exactly the same! :(

Same with mine :(. any idea's how to cure it ??

Hammer!

Mine did exactly the same until I 'fixed' it at Christmas.

There are two plastic bars that slide out of either side of the glovebox to hold it closed. I found my rattling was due to these rattling about when the glovebox was closed.

I cut two small squares out of a thin rubber sheet, and stuck them with double sided tape onto the 2 areas on the lid where the rubber grommets contact.

That put some extra tension on the locking bars, and it stopped the rattle completely. I wish I had done it sooner, cos that rattle has wound me up since i bought the car!

If you need a photo of what I've done just let me know btw

Great  Can you put a pic up please? I'm sure alot of Octavia owners would love to get rid of that irritating rattling noise. Maybe a better idea than using a hammer. :)

Sounds crazy but check the handbrake button... that also rattles, I thought it was coming from the glove box area but it turned out to be handbrake.

And, if it's actually the HB release, get an old soft drinks bottle, cut a rectangle out of it, and wrap that around the button.

Cheers, I know exactly what you mean and after giving the 2 bars a little wobble thats where my sound is coming from.

Now off on the scrounge for something to pack it out.

I used some black foam/rubber sheet, that was left over from when I lined my toolbox with it. Can only have been about 3mm thick.

Ken - That's an awesome tip! I'll remember that one.

My latest rattle is the drivers door lock pin thing that pops up and down. My new speakers are shaking the hell out of it!

I had the same problem 6 months after i bought mine.

Solution:-

Bought 2 plastic door switches (plunger type), checked g/box closed gap with blue tack, trimmed plunger end down to the gap +5mm on the length and removed the spade connector on the back of the plunger switch.

Pulled out the rubber cones, opened up the existing cone holes in the plastic to just below body dia of switch body. pressed switches in, hey presto no rattles.

The 2 new plungers, being internally sprung, are constantly exerting pressure, (via the g/box door contact face) on the 2 square latches against their respective square cutouts either side of the glovebox.

Mine rattles too, but it does it mainly when its cold. Its right in your ear as well:(

I have the same rattle. After following all the different bits of advice, the rattle was still there. Now here's the spooky thing. I took the glovebox out in December and it's been in the garage since - but the rattle is still there! I've tried and tried to find the source of the noise, but other than losing my sanity I have not been at all successful.:o

I wonder if mine rattles - I'm deaf in my left ear so I have no idea!

I choose to be as thats the side of me SWMBO sits

I have a rattle/buzzing noise coming from the front left hand side somewhere around 1500 to 2000rpm although I think I've tracked mine down to the front left wheel arch liner.

same here, its the most annoying thing about my car  if i apply preasure to door panel with my elbow it stops rattling, dont fancy stipping door to bits though to try fixing it.

Even though my vRS is a MK1, it's still in warranty. I mentioned my various rattles to the service manager not long ago as they were fixing one ay the time and he merely gave me a wry smile. He said that because of the firmer suspension on the vRS, it highlights the build quality of the Mk1 Octavia. The softer suspension and higher profile tyres on the other models help mask this by absorbing a lot of the vibrations, therefore reducing the rattles.

I have had less rattles and annoying noises from much older cars than this one, including Fiats and Citroens. I still love my car though.:D

I'd tell him to go and find them none the less, they don't half spout some ****e when they can't be bothered to look.

Mines rattles it's tits off most of the time, glovebox, head lining, rear boot panel and some that I have no idea about, but as you say, I still love the old shed.

Meantime my Elegance only has one intermittent creak (except in really cold weather) so saying that the vRS suffers more because it's stiffer sprung and tyred might have some truth to it. Claiming that "all Octys do that" is patently MBF though.

I think alot of mine are "self inflicted" to be honest, trying to run various cables and sound proofing. As others I have been in don't seem half as bad as mine.

Well after previously owning a Jap motor where the plastics are similar to what they make tic-tac containers from mine seems quite quiet by comparison

I agree, touch anything on these cars and it will rattle for the rest of its life
