Nokia N85 vs 5800

Featured Replies

I seem to have narrowed down the choice for my next mobile to these two.

The N85 runs S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 2, but the 5800 is the first mobile to run the new S60 5th Edition, which I understand has been developed for the touch screen.

Has anyone got any experience with the upgraded system, and in particular how well it works with older applications - I'm assuming there will be some degree of backwards compatability.

Any other thoughts to help me decide between these two mobiles would be welcome?

What are the best S60 / Symbian forums to use?

I don't understand any of that, but I've just got a new Nokia 5800 and it's fab!! :)

It's scary - a couple of conversations with Neo_VR and pittVRS and I'm turning into a fone-geek.

I just wanted an alphanumeric keypad for single (sausage) thumb text entry - I didn't care whether it was real or touch screen so the 5800 would have been OK on that score!

In the end though I plumped for a shiny new N85, which is on order from Orange, and should be with me in the next day or two.

The main deciding factors were...

  • Ease of geekification by my local friendly Phone God.
  • The FM transmitter - I don't need this in my car but I'm hoping it will be useful when I'm in hire cars.
  • The N85 just feels a bit more grown up and business like.

Good Lad! You wont be disappointed. Member you can debrand the phone with NSS just like the N95, then get the latest firmware. You can update the firmware over the WiFi / 3G with this phone - you don't even have to plug it into the PC.

I've found a bug with mine recently, sometimes when replying to a text, you type the reply and try to send, then it says "message editor already in use" if you try and save the typed reply to drafts, the phone deletes the text. Can be annoying after typing a long message.

i had that same problem with my N95 Roy... took a good clear-down of my inbox to sort it.
