VRS diesel

Featured Replies

I'm thinking of replacing the tank (51Octavia Estate 1.8T) with a shiny 57 plate VRS diesel.

Those of you with them, what do you think of them? I took one out last night and was surprised by how little extra power there was, but I'm still in petrol mode and getting confused by the 4,500 red line. How long does it take to get used to that throttle pedal?

Cheers guys

They go really well I think. Slight flat spot at about 1200 rpm takes some getting used to but other than that they are great. 50+ mpg's and plenty of pulling power is a great combo.

I have a fully loaded 56 plate one for sale on pistonheads. PM me for the link

Hi,

I've had my VRS since October 08

Love it, at the moment anything i through against it. Like Watford's Flood Waters it still keeps going .

My only little gripe would be the traction control is a little keen if going for it around roundabouts.

Had great fun in the snow .

Even little brother cant stop pestering me to borrow it :bullwhip:.

Regards to all

Love mine, fantastic car. Remember the majority of the power comes in the mid range and up, you just have to get used to driving it. If you want a whole lot more power, get it mapped afterwards!

I went from a Mk1 Vrs to the diesel Mk2. Have to say I noticed no difference in power. Took me a few months to get used to the reduced rev range and get the best out of it (several times I would be overtaking and wonder why I was not going faster only to look down and see I had run out of revs!!!)

Like PSM I went from a lightly mapped Mk1 vRS to the TDi, not being used to driving diesels it took a little while to get used to the way it works, but my goodness, that torque surge is great. Also bear in mind that the mk2 Octy (in all forms) is quite a different beast to the Mk1.

The biggest difference I noticed was that the Mk2 handles a lot better on the standard suspension compared to the Mk1 (IMHO).

They don't take long to get used to, although judging throttle and clutch positions for pulling away caused me to either stall or slip the clutch too much when I first got mine :o

Don't believe all that you read about fuel consumption - average is lowish 40's unless you either drive like a nun or never venture in to town ;)

Having gone from a TFSI VRS to the PD TDI VRS I have to say it's a bit of a let down, not as quick and the 42mpg is a real let down

Had a TDi vRS since September 2007, having covered nearly 30000 miles in that time, probably 6000 of those towing 1200Kg of caravan. It has been perfect. Have been a diesel driver for many years so little adjustment was needed, but as others have siad it just keeps going and going!

We are trading ours in for a new vRS common rail on 1st March ... not because there is anything wrong with the old one .... but we were offered a deal we couldn't refuse!

42mpg? Is that all around town?

We're running a vRS PD at the moment it's done about 700 miles now and its averaging about 47mpg most of the time and 55mpg on a run.

Or maybe you're a little heavy footed!

If your not in a mad rush and don't mind a bit of a travel out then come down to Epsom on the 21st and drive both the petrol and diesel side by side, and then make your mind up!

No it's a good mixture, have seen as high as 50mpg on one occasion, but overall it's 42mpg.

Regarding being heavy footed my consistant overall mpg in the TFSI was 35mpg!

Not done 2k miles yet in mine and I'm averaging 47mpg. Had a PD140 before and this is definitely better and quieter. The power is less vicious (see earlier posts) and the deals are extremely good if you're a haggler. The additional equipment for free is also a bonus. As the salesperson said, why buy an Audi ?

Mines averaged 38.3 mpg over the first 2,300 miles and I haven't been particularly heavy footed. Still needs running in though. I think I have seen 50mpg once!

It's not as quick as the petrol vRS so disappointing from that perspective but I'll probably go for a remap soon...

I love mine, and that's two years on. Love the way the power is delivered, but be gentle in the damp as the wheels will spin quite easily.....It's the perfect car for me at the moment with the boot space and power with decent handling allowing for some fun.

It puzzles me that people would be disappointed that the diesel is not as fast as the petrol, after all, a quick look at a couple figures and it's obvious:

2.0TFSI Hatch - power 200bhp, weight 1395kg

2.0CRD Hatch - power 170bhp, weight 1425kg

As for fuel consumption, if I drive mine at speeds that enable me to regularly return high 40's or better, I rather think I've bought the wrong car! Driven like that I'd have been off with a PD105 and getting 60+ mpg.

The general consensus seems to be the diesel achieves an average of 10 mpg more than the petrol.

They're 198bhp and 168bhp respectively. You're quoting ps figures for power.

I knew it wouldn't be as quick, still doesn't stop me being disappointed though. In all fairness there isn't much in it, especially at motorway speeds in 4th, 5th and 6th.

And you have to obey the speed limit of course. You can only drive like a loon on a track and even there's rules...
