Fun that intermittently doesn't start?????

Featured Replies

 Hi - my son has a '98 Fun which he currently has down in Eastbourne at University. For a couple of months it has occasionally refused to start. It's not a battery problem, neither does it seem to be the starter motor. Every now and then it is just completely dead with a small click coming from the fuse box when he tries to start.

If he leaves it for a few hours, as he did today in Eastbourne Tescos carpark, it usually starts. Does anyone have any bright ideas? You have probably gathered neither of us are mechanical geniuses or we could probably work this out ourselves. It doesn't seem any better or worse in cold or wet weather.

Also if there's anyone in the Eastbourne area, (he saw two Funs at Tescos today), do you know somewhere he could get it looked at/fixed fairly inexpensively?

Thanks

solenoid on the starter maybe?

i had a similar problem, except it wasnt the fusebox clicking it was the starter

I had a similar problem on my old Felicia - it was the ignition switch - I didn't change it as I was part exchanging it - just hold the key or try turning it and holding it a few times.

i would guess at a faulty ignition switch too

Ignition switch, solonoid, or how does the immobiliser on these work?

if it were the immobilizer, it would probably start ad run for a few seconds before dying out

Ok; I'm more used to immobilisers disabling the starter.

The immobiliser on a fun disabled the starter circuit,IIRC

you sure?? the starter solenoid is wired directly to the 'start' terminal on the ignition switch, i doubt that the fun would have a different immobilizer system but i could be wrong:confused:

the carburetor model i have has a ignition system with a coil (silver tube coil) a ignition box that in my case was black and solid, but i've seen them in a metal container too and a distributor with no point gaps just sends a signal to the ignition box and that then drives the coil to produce a spark... you know the rest.

anyways, the reason im explaining this is because the same thing happen to me, and when the car did not want to start i had no spark, at all... if you have the same tipe of ignition system, check the box, here is a very know cause and most time they get swapped and after never have a problem
