DSG7s (dry clutch) vs DSG6s (wet clutch)

Featured Replies

Here goes the big guestion: is the new DSG 7s dry clutch more reliable compared to the wet one?

My undertsanding is that a wet clutch can be slipped more without damage due to the oil cooling, so it can last longer. However in the case of the dry clutch, the inner clutch in particular, has to be cooled sufficiently or it will warp. how good is the cooling system of the dry clutch? VW states that as cooling is not needed for the clutch of the 7-speed DSG, no oil cooler is required!! what happens when you stuck in a huge traffic jam for couple of hours??

is durability an issue with the new DSG 7s dry clutch? Audi and VW claim that the current designs are expected to last as long as the whole vehicle!!

The DSG6 is a gearbox that can cope 350Nm and is for the TDIs as well as the T(F)SI.

The newer DSG7 can only cope 250Nm and will be for the 1.8TSI and smaller TDIs.

Thats why I think you cannot compare them.

actually what i am interested in is the dry and wet clutch technology of the DSG and the durability...

IIRC there are two different dry 7 speed DSGs currently being made by VAG - a high power version in some Audis (so far), and a low power one that is now coming out in Octys with less powerful engines.

VAG probably know quite a bit about the durability of both, but are unlikely to share that knowledge with the likes of us. We'll probably just have to wait and see how they perform in the field (as usual).

You re right, audi uses a bigger 7 speed DSG. But this unit will never fit in our cars as it is fitted lenghtwise. (and with quattro?).

Durability can be equal on these systems. It depends on how much the clutch can cope with. Not on whether it is dry or wet.

If it is built tough enough it will last, no matter what kind of clutch is used.

So, in other words, if you are looking to remap a (vRS) Octy do not try and do it with a DSG gearbox (remapped vRS TDIs will easily produce 400Nm). :(

The gearboxes are very different both in layout and operation.

The clutch pack is quite small in the 7 speed hence the torque limit.

thanks for the replies and foto...

i was surfing the net trying to find info with regards to reliabilty of the DSG 7 and actually i found out that in the states peeps are saying that till 60k miles the DSG is solid. however after 60k some problems may start appearing...

P.S lummox you have a pm..
