potential warped brakes

Featured Replies

Ive got a feeling that my new brakes have warped after only 2500-3000 miles. Zero sixty discs and tarox strada pads. 1 track day is all they have had and that is it.

i get a vibration though the brake pedal as well as a vibration noises when braking from above 70. anybody think it could be something other than warped discs.

Caliper pistons maybe???

Only way to tell is to use a dial gauge and check for disc run out. It should be less than 4 thou. As well as the gauge you also need a magnetic clamp stand to mount the gauge onto the suspension strut. Handy tool to have and not expensive these days.

Vibration through the brake pedal is a classic sign of warped discs though. Also worth checking wheel bearing by rocking the wheels with the car on axle stands.

Also worth checking no wheel balance weights have fallen off, and that there are no clods of muck stuck to the inside of the wheels. Check the tyre walls for bulges as well.

Gonna be discs though.

How did you bed the pads in?

I'd suggest going out onto an empty motorway on a quiet night, warming the car up and then doing some 70mph to 10mph stops. Don't actually come to a complete stop.

Do this about between 10 and 30 times and if you start to smell brakes then give it a 5 minute or so drive to cool down and then give it another few stops.

This should drive off the last of the resin in the brakes and also hopefully clean up any deposits left on the discs. If that doesn't work then as aobve you'll have to get them checked.

Obviously make sure there are no other cars around you when you're doing the suggested actions as they most likely won't have a clue what on earth you're doing.

I have ZeroSixties and Mintex DiscEaters - sorry - Extremes, and I've never had any possibility of a whiff of a chance of them warping despite being used on track, motorway and B-road! I do need to cook them every few months or so, however, much as Mark's described above. So I'd follow that route before starting to take your car to bits!

Oh, and you will get 'vibration noise' braking from speed, since the leading edge of the pad makes a sound as it runs over each groove; just be thankful the grooves are curved and not straight! ;)

i read in a few places linked to on here that warping discs is incredibly hard to do and more likely 99% of the time its pad material on the disc surface.

Do what cheezemonkhai said!

Use them hard and get them nice and hot, but don't stop the car completely whatever you do, or your make it worse. Keep her rolling.

Slamming on the brakes at 80mph and coming to a dead stop in motorway traffic jams kills the discs, as the pads will deposit themselves on the disc when you stop, causing the imbalance.

There's a website that explains all this jazz somewhere....

very good read which i have used a few times, scared the crap outta me the first time as i had smoke pouring out of the arches from my new pads and discs.

very interesting read, ill be trying that out when the roads are nnot so icy for sure.

i think it sounds like a more likely cause, as i fail to saee how the brakes could have warped in the 2 thousand miles i have had them on, especially as pratically 95 percent of the braking has been gentle from now more than 80 mph. I noticed it coming back from JKM RR day at an unspcified but high speed and the audi S4 in front of me stomped on his anchors which just so happened to be way stronger than mine, and ever since i have noticed the vibration when braking above 70mph

right gents i did what it said on that stoptech website today, and the good news is that it has sorted out my brakes a treat, nine80-05mph stops with one 120-05mph stop in the middle.

now there is no vibration or loud noise coming from the brakes.

what i would say is that it took a few miles of diving slow without braking to get rid of the fade on the brakes, they were smoking.

cheers for the help guys

good to hear, thing i find now is to remember not to hold the brake when coming to a complete stop from high speed as this is often what leaves the deposits on the disc.

definately, It makes perfect sense as well, id just never heard of it before this. chuffed to bits that i dont have to replace the brakes now:D

Surely you were never braking from more than 70? Or do you mean km/h? ;):D

of course. that must have been a typing error. how silly of me

I had the same problem on a brand new 1999 Octy the front wheel disks where changed twice on the guarantee and it failed is first MOT with warped front disks i Complained to Skoda but they did not want know. But the dealer had the disks checked on a lathe and they had warped again all they charged me for was a new set of disks and no labour charges. I now have the latest model
