Most effective way of replacing bushes?

Featured Replies

im planning on changing all my suspension bushes in a couple of weeks

was just wonding what methods people have used to remove and replace their bushes,

the ones i know of are,

burning them out with a blowtorch (i understand this can take a little while and be messy)

pressing them out (i dont have a press)

hammering them out (a bit optimistic i think)

or drilling them out, then cutting through the metal outer ring.

if anyone has any reccomended ways of doin this advice would be grateful

Yes... Pay someone to do them haha

Ive got an 01 VRS and my rear axle bushes need doing as well, is this a big / expensive job?

Redundant quote deleted.

Cut out the middle with hacksaw blade.......

BFO screwdriver and hammer too the ring thats left inside, hit it from the outside in and it will just fold.

Yes this method is best. Don't need a press. For the front of the wishbone bush just use an oversize socket that will take the bush in it when it pops through, and a under size socket the size of the bush to use as a press, put it in a vice with the sockets using lots of WD40 and away you go.

hammering them out (a bit optimistic i think)

or drilling them out, then cutting through the metal outer ring.

Using a combination of both of above for the rear front wishbone bushes cut down them and tap them out.

Be prepared for replacing the ball joint bolts as if the car has done some mileage they are prone to snapping. I covered this in another thread with part numbers. Actually thinking about it, it was for you that time also:eek: Have'nt you done them yet.

i have all the parts now apart from the bolts you listed that need to be ordered from my local stealership. (the ball joint mounts are on that list, thanks mate :)

i have a helping had coming up to visit me in just under 3 weeks now (im not counting honest!!!!!!) so i will be doin them then,

as much as i would have liked to buy everything in 1 big lump ive had to do it over 3 months, just couldnt justify spending 800-900 in one month

dammit!

sounds possible

im lucky enough to have a press at work so i just press them in & out,i have over the years cut them out & pressed them in using big sockets & a vice,i have even hammered them in once or twice:eek: i dont know if your planning to change the rear axle bushes or not? i have never done them on a octy but on other cars i have done it in situ using special tools, this saves taking the axle out! you could strip your car down & take the parts to a local garage & get them to press them in for you? not a difficult job to do in all but i would say that been a mechanic for 18 years! hardest bit will be striping it all down(poss siezed bolts etc!):)
