I've had exactly the same on all 4 wheels of my 08 Scout - small areas of delamination. All were replaced (3 at first, then the 4th) UNDER WARRANTY with no quibbles at all by Delmore Cars in Inverness

  • Got my Scout alloys back from the fefurber at the weekend an I'm pretty happy with the result: As you can see when side by side with my winter wheels they are a bit lighter, but I can't decide whic

  • Those really do look quality finished... especially after 3 yrs too!

Must buy some jetseal 109.

Tried it, only slightly delays the inevitable

My case for four new alloys is currently with Skoda UK as we speak, dealer not holding out much hope.

I've just had the Scout in for a service and MOT and had the garage look at the wheels which were delaminating around the tyre valve. All four wheels being replaced under warranty (which expires on July 2nd) next week. No quibble from the garage at all. Thanks again to this forum as it has given me good knowledge and helped me avoid problems.

I too have had approval for three replacement alloys approved by Skoda UK yesterday.

The dealer couldn't see the damage to the fourth alloy but it is there so will have to take it in and show them.

This is my second replacement set, warranty also expires next month.

I'm thinking of offering to buy all four damaged alloys back off them to use as winter wheels, wonder if they will let me and if so how much they will want!?

Not sure but I think Skoda may be refurbing them now so they will be sent back

Mines in for 2 more shortly

Was that from the Newcastle franchise Ross?

Sorry - missed that! Yes it was.

I've currently got an old set of Audi 16" alloys in at Romax in Stockton which my winter tyres are going on. They quoted £200 but as the they didn't have tyres on the price is down to £160 for a full refurb! They have a good reputation with plenty of dealer traffic & I'm sure I read a good report on this forum somewhere. I'll be getting my Proteus wheels done in plain silver for the spring.

Ross, it would be great if you could post pictures after you've had the Proteus's done.

I've no doubt mine will need doing after another winter

I'd be keen to see what they look like without the polished finish...

Will do. Probably be back end of March or April.

Just dropped them in today for full refurb to plain silver & will be having them swapped for my winter wheels on Thursday. Will get some pics on this weekend if not before.

Looking to get my Scout alloys refurbed in the next week or so as well but will be in Anthracite. Last place I used was The Wheel Specialist in Manchester who did a good job but at circa £300 for the four wheels weren't particularly cheap, anyone got any recomendations for the Manchester or Huddersfield areas?

There's 15% off TWS at the moment if that helps? I got an email through from them. For bookings made in March I think (but actual appointment could be later I believe).

I have another recommendation, which I'll probably use again for my winters now they're off, but they're over towards Liverpool.

TWS are expensive IMO. Maybe worth asking your dealer who they use. Romax who I use always have high end cars from dealers outside. There was a brand new Jag on axle stands when I dropped my wheels off today.

You get what you pay for in my opinion. Anything less than £80 per wheel inc. VAT is a quick job. Think how much your dealer’s hourly labour rate is and think what they do for your £80-£100 in those 60 minutes.

If you are paying £60 or less for a wheel refurb then there is a good chance it is going to be a quick job. This isn't necessarily a bad thing if you are selling the car, they'll look nice enough for long enough. Are you a dealer sticking the car on your forecourt? Again the cheaper the better, when your customer comes back to complain you'll be able to recite the usual 'that'll be wear and tear sir, have you been letting the wife drive / using acidic wheel cleaner blah-blah!'. So there is demand for these low price point refurbs but best avoided if you want a long term fix.

The final result and the lasting finish is all in the prep work. Put in the time removing the old paint, repairing damage, preparing the surface and applying the powder coat takes time.

If the job is cheap then either they aren't taking their time, using substandard materials or making a loss. My guess is that it isn't the latter.

Experience is valuable too; find someone who does it all day every day, not someone who does it only when required. Avoid mobile vans like the plague. Also just because they are expensive doesn't mean they aren't still doing a quick job!

They may look nice when back on the car but put them through a couple of winters and tyre changes and you'll wish you paid a little more.

My vRS is having all four wheels powder coated (not painted) next month for £320. They need the wheels for two full days to ensure that each layer can dry and harden properly. The guy I've found does nothing but alloy wheel repairs, including split rims and does work for a few race teams. People even courier wheels to him. He offers a life time guarantee too. And for what, another twenty quid a corner.

Recommendations speak volumes, not recommendations on a couple of month old repairs; I want recommendations from those who have had their alloys on for a couple of years.

Good luck, we Scout owners have a great opportunity to get to know our local wheel refurber’s well!

I went on recommendation here & elsewhere on line - they only do wheels & motorbike frames.  They have my wheels for 2 days, same as last set.  The price has gone up to £49 per corner without tyres (could be cos the last set were smaller at 16"). I could have paid more with a guy who moonlights from chipsaway.  The Audi wheels I had done were around 10 year old & in a bit of a state cosmetically but look like new now.

They have only been on for 6 months & both sets will only be on the car around six months a year each so it'll be a 4 years before before I'll be able to give a 2 year recommendation.  I may just still have the car then.  Obviously if they turn to **** I'll post sooner! (would post smilie but can't see any formatting tools etc in FF/Linux)

I'll post the pics of the silver finish on the Proteus so you can compare with the polished.

Re above - cost is another £10 a corner if they have to remove & refit tyres so £59 a corner under normal circumstances. As I'm getting a couple new tyres fitted the fitter is happy to do the tyre removal & refitting inclusive

Where are you getting them done Silver?

Here, I've heard some very good feedback about his work...

http://www.ianjemison.co.uk/

£65 + VAT, but this includes tyre removal and refitting and is powder coating not painting.

I'll post up some before and after pics.

Oh, and if I remember I'll update this thread with a picture of them in two years :giggle:

I got a call my wheels were ready today. I took them to the tyre fitter & the previous manager has left who fitted tyres to my last refurbs & they have a new policy (official or ad hoc, I don't know) - as the wheels have just been refurbed, any marks from the fitting of the tyres or (more likely) the balancing process will be at my risk. If I leave it 2 weeks they will accept responsibility for any damage.

So they will be given a few coats of Collinite while I wait.

I'm very please with the powder-coat finish - same as on my refurbed Audi wheels I use for my winters, but the Proteus wheels look better. I'll not miss the original polished finish!

The Audi winter wheels.

Got my Scout alloys back from the fefurber at the weekend an I'm pretty happy with the result:

As you can see when side by side with my winter wheels they are a bit lighter, but I can't decide which I prefer at the moment:

However I think they will look good when on the car:

I decided to leave the winters on for another week because of the forecast which I think was vindicated when I woke up to this yesterday morning:

Just a few more comparisons:

So the winters are remaining for now:

(Hope this has worked as it is the first time I have tried photos on here)

I think it's just the angle but the faces of the spokes seem to have an 'orange peel' effect to them.

Looking good though, will be nice to see them on the car!

Mine were done 3 years ago at the wheel specialist in Leeds, still look good DSC00191.jpg

2012-03-19131215.jpg

The winter wheels you see on my car above were done by the Wheel Specialists too (Manchester branch) and I am very happy with the results (Colour was anthracite/charcoal) they cost £300 and I just couldn't scrape that together again along with new tyres so I looked for a more cost effective option. Obviously I did my homework as I didn't want a cheaply spray job, but having spoken to Steve at Diamond Wheels in Stockport he sounded like the perfectionist I was looking for and quoted £220 all in. He has done a top job too! Colour is anthracite (He also had charcoal as a deeper grey) which I am happy with as I always thought the wheel specialist ones were a bit dark for the car.

Anyway all in all I am a happy bunny and would recommend Steve at Diamond Wheels to anyone looking for this service in the Manchester area (And the Wheel Specialists in they want something a bit more expensive).

And finally the new summer tyres are Matador MP46 Hectorra2's which I will review when I've tried them, but I'm led to believe they are made by Continental in the same factory, with the same rubber to the same design as the Conty's so should hopefully be decent.

My brother lives at Springs road in Holmfirth, I cycle over to see him once a month

It's a nice part of the world, some good places to cycle as well although the hills can be a killer. Due to personal fitness I tend to stick to walking these days. Mtb is still in the shed though, maybe one day.

I know Spring Bank, Spring Lane and Spring Gardens but not sure about Spring Road?

Is that paint or powdercoat. I wondered about the orange peel effect. They would likely have needed a bit of sand blasting on the old polished finish for the new finish to get a good key.
