Should braking kill the power - left foot braking

Featured Replies

Question for the techies.

I seem to remember that when I tried to practice left foot braking some time ago, for fun only, whenever I pressed the brake the power died even with my right foot squeezing the throttle..

Am I right in thinking this was correct and is a Skoda/VW diesel engine feature.

The reason I ask is that that function now seems to have disappeared because when I press the brake now, the engine continues to drive forward. It is very noticeable in the higher gears and feels like it lessens my braking power.

Is there a function linked to the brake pedal via the switch or something?

Any ideas guys?

Yes it is. It should cut the power

Yes, when the engine ECU detects that the brake pedal is pressed it ignores the throttle pedal position and behaves as though the throttle is not pressed.

It's not just Skoda/VW diesel - it's all engines (petrol & diesel) in the whole VAG group - evn my RS4 does it.

There is a switch on there and yes it is used for that purpose too. I am guessing you do not have cruise control, as that will misbehave too with that fault.

From what I remember though, those switches were updated with an better design.

It is not supposed to be possible to do left foot braking.

I have found this to be a pain (after 20 years of driving rally cars) as I used to left foot brake a lot before getting the fabia. Can it be turned off in VAGCOM???

Simon

I dont think mine is working, 'cos I can left foot brake and power at the same time!

Strange.

It should not be possible no - Lofty, do you have cruise control?

left foot braking is bad... i almost smash my face of the windscreen when i try it... need to master it :)

Not in my car you wouldn't, my brakes have always been crap. I wonder if a malfunctioning power killing switch is part of the problem because when I come off the throttle and brake, the engine keeps driving, especially in the higher gears and at low revs.

I left foot brake a lot, but not at the same time as applying power, use it mainly on a fast run etc...not in town etc...

You get used to the pressure you need to use.

If you haven't got cruise you can disconnect the two inner most wires on the brake switch and it will stop doing it.

That could be throttle sensor faulty, do you ever get erratic idle? as in too high sometimes.

Been that way on Golfs since at least R reg -first experience of it was in firms van when we had the floods in the midlands - thought I'd drive a little with foot on brake to make sure they'd dried out (to save my trousers) ,to find engine almost cut out .
