Door pillar trim fitting

Featured Replies

Anyone fitted the vinyl door pillar trims, as the instructions mention removing the wiping horizontal seal, er and i'm not the worlds greatest DIYer  so need some advice on how to remove them.

Thanks

Ian

I know it can be done reasonably easy. I think Ian's 4x4 already had this on and I think someone else on here has also done this.

I think the rough translation of the instructions does not help either. The trim piece being reffered to is the rubber bit that runs along the bottom of the window. I think you need to remove this to enable you to remove the vertical strip although I think theres another way.

thx Manny,

I'll attempt this this weekend....ur right the instruction translations, they leave alot to be desired ...

why these arent fitted as standard god only knowes as most manufactures fit these (ps does the vRS come with anti-hijacking c/l as standard? just had this enabled aswell....keep forgetting and it sounds like youve just been shot at when it locks!!)

No auto locking doors on the RS however mine has an aftermarket alarm that does this function, you are right the central locking from inside the car is loud.

How did you get on fitting the pillar trims, Ian? Any problems? I am waiting for warmer weather - and the return of my car from Yorkshire - before fitting mine.

Hi Denis,

Fitted in the warm spell we had a couple of weeks ago.

I'll compile a step through guide, cause I didn't find it that easy. There again as I posted earlier...I'm no DIY'er.

Worth the struggle...you bet...it enhances the lines of the body\glass :1:

Err, i just spotted this thread...

How old is your RS? cos mine has the auto-door locking enabled.

Maybe you should go see your dealer, it might just need switching on ;)

I don't suppose you have a photo that you can post of the side of your car do you (or know a website with a picture) ?

:)

Will this do?

The car belongs to one of our most senior members who fitted the trims himself!

And this thread contains a blow by blow account of how he did the job :D

It's the side of a car - what am I looking for....?

Thanks - how much, roughly ?

(Nick - the side pillars are black to go in with the window line - eg. Audi - rather than body colour)

Oh I see. Never noticed. Is that done with those stick-on bits of plastic?

I guess it's more important for estates - I think mine looks fine as it is - but it's a dark colour anyway.

Not more than

Thanks Denis - it may have to wait a month as I think I've just twigged why my 4x4 seems 'lazy' transferring the power to the rear wheels (see ESP thread !)

Hey Denis, you mention that you've got 8 peices of vinyl...i have too, but assumed that two of them were from a Fabia kit, as mine had been opened, and the spatula was used...WTF do the very thin peices go?????

I've read 4x4 account on fitting, its very good...i'll throw in my tuppence worth.

The hotter the better.

Make sure that the driver and passenger door vinyls are the same length.

Mine weren't...I matched the tops, but when I applied the vinyl upon reaching the bottom they where out (only by 1mm...but i know!!!).

If not, I would use a straight edge, plus the scalpel and trim both accordingly.

I removed the front horizontal trims, as its quite easy, as long as you dont try and prize off too much at once...up by 5mm...then move along 40cm's then prize up by 5mm again...continue to near the door mirror, then start again...by another 5mm etc

Remove 40mm ish of the backing, stick 2mm or so of the trim and offer down the pillar to make sure that the vinyl runs parallel to the pillar...Use the spatula its very effective at removing air...with a smooth movement pull the backing off and at the same time, using the spatula to adhere vinyl (you can re-apply/adjust the vinyl if you go a little astray).

You need a blunt instrument to press the vinyl into the right angles of the door pillar... i used the back of my scalpel handle

The rear door vinyl next to the front door is quite tricky as it goes around two right angles and then wraps around the pillar...i think this is the section that i'm not pleased with...

Rear door trim near qtr light = biatch of a job

Like 4x4 says....you cant remove the vertical window trim without a complete rear door strip down...

Its near fookin impossible to do this by yourself as you need to prize the trim, whilst pushing the vinyl behind...It left me feeling like i'd hung by my finger tips for 8 hours....nasty

did i mention that it needs to be HOT....
