New to this site & my 1st Skoda :) a 2002 Octavia VRS..Looking for Sat nav system

 any advise appreciated

Hi there, welcome to the site. A number of folks on here have the manufactors system in there cars including me.

example of one here:

SKODA MFD Navigation system DX +GPS anthenna +CD map on eBay, also, Volkswagen, Car Parts, Cars, Parts Vehicles (end time 23-Feb-09 22:09:59 GMT)

This guy on ebay is where i purchased mine. They are ok systems they are accurate. They don't have post code search apart from the very new versions, and not as glossy as Tom Tom etc, but look good in the dash and illuminate nice. VW versions look teh same but don't light up green.

If you don't like these you could also get none standard DVD style systems that have SAT NAV on them but you will pay more.

Thanks for the info... Have to start saving some pennies.. when you say the new versions have post code search..I presume they are a lot more expesive?

None of them do more than the first 4 or 5 characters of a postcode. All the Skoda ones are the DX model and I'd definitely get that. There are plenty being ripped out of Euroland Superbs, so take your time and get a bargain.

Thanks... will have a good look round...so the superbs are DX and fully compatible? I am new to Skoda so you will have to excuse my ignorance...They do add the finishing touch though so I will have to resist the temptation to rush in and get hold of one..

The MFD1 is a very old satnav now. VAG started supplying them in the mid-late 1990's and the technology looks very old-hat compared to a Tomtom. The Original VW MFD1's were Series A, and they went all the way to Series G, which has the best Firmware. The VW supplied ones have blue and red lighting. SEAT supplied ones are orangey as are the Audi ones. Skoda units have green lighting.

All the Skoda units are series DX and they are near-as-darn-it the same as a VW Series G. If it's going in a Skoda, you want a Skoda DX unit as the others look odd.

There are loads on ebay and if you post in the wanted section of Buy/Sell on these forums then I'm sure folks will appear to offer you one.

The wiring-in isn't supposed to be especially complicated (but I didn't do mine myself) and you will need what is called a plug 'n play cable to make it work in a non-satnav equipped car. These, and the satnav antenna are normally supplied with the satnav unit if you buy it from ebay. The satnav antennas are usually magnetic and you stick then to the bulkhead under the windscreen, from where they work very well.

You also need the CD changer unit if you want to play CDs as the MFD1 is a data drive and it doesn't play music CDs from the slot-mount on the front.

I like mine very much, but if you're coming from a Tomtom you may be horribly disappointed.

Hmm...food for thought,, thanks for the info

I fitted mine myself, and I can say that it took less than 10 minutes.

The plug and play cable is a must and makes life easy as you do not need to wire up anything just plug one end into the Skoda loom and the other into the DX unit. Then you connect the Sat nav receiver one end to the DX unit and the other end is magnetised and you fit it up behind the glovebox. Start the car up. Enter the 4 digit code(same as the radio code and will come with the DX unit) Put the Map cd in the slot and it will start loading. Job done

You can get installation instructions on here:
