Brake disc upgrade

Featured Replies

My front discs on my vrs are past there best and in the past with all my cars i have upgraded to performance versions but being newish to the skoda seen i just wondered what people recomend ie drilled or grooved or both or even stay with the standard set up

Thanks

standard with upgraded pads like mintex extreme or ferrodo DS2500 is what i would say.

Agreed.

Also agree. I wasted a lot of money trying to get the standard brakes to work any better. Good pads make some (hardly any) difference but changing the whole caliper set-up is the only way to get really good brakes. I've just taken my 6 piston calipers off as i'm fitting stainless sliders to them. Put the standard brakes back on which include grooved performance discs and £130 ferrodo DS2500 pads and they feel terrible. I had forgetten how bad they actually were . Can't wait to get the 6 pots back on. So save your penny's as there are no big gains to be had by spending money on the standard set-up.

octavia vrs off topic but what six pots are you running???

Cheers Matt - how did you do that?! I was just searching - my old email links didn't work either

searched threads started by username. I'll be reading through them again tonight and dream of having brakes like that,

Will it be a Kleenex moment?

to fit the 6pots you need bigger wheels dont you aswell? as the clearence on the back of the wheel isnt enough?

No, the standard 17 inch spider alloys clear without any issues.

well thats just a load of twot really, uprated pads certainly do make a difference as does uprated fluid(helps against fade and increases service inetervals mainly) but obviously not as good as fitting mahoosive brakes but still a worth while upgrade.

Twot? Ok then. No need to be rude :D

Some high performance fluids require more regular change intervals, and still boil when really pushed due to the standard caliper being quite poor at disipating heat. At no point did I say performance parts don't make a difference and that becomes more obvious when components reach higher operating temps, but I can honestly say the set-up which gave the most bite on standard equipment was a set of mintex discs and pads that were put on while a set of DS2500 were sent away to be analized due to premature failure. I can honestly say that after spending hundreds on dics and pads I was always left dissapointed and frustrated. I see where you are coming from but all the above is my opinion based on much experience of the subject which is what Forums such as Briskoda are about.

Interesting which mintex discs and pads did you get?

I thought about red stuff pads.

all i'm saying is upgraded pads and fluid are worth while but obviously only not the ultimate, can't say i've ever driven with 312's anyway as i went from 288's to 323mm brembo's :D but i do find the DS2500 pads in them to be pretty good once warm.

They were standard discs and pads - part of the brake box packages off ebay. It was a temporary fit whilst pads where sent to Ferrodo. For every day driving they were superb but never put a really hard heat cycle through them as new DS2500's arrived for my nurburgring trip. It depends very much on the driving you do but they are more than capable for fast road but I wouldn't recomend them for track use. However I do use standard mintex rear discs with Mintex extreme pads on the rear which are very good and don't cost much and handle track days with ease whilst beng gentle on discs/Rotors.
