Gear oil looks like cappuccino

Featured Replies

Is this a sign of anything bad or usual? It's been due a change anyway for a bit. I admit I think it's slightly overfilled too to be able to see the cappuccino effect.

water in the oil

my guess (mind you, a guess from a normal guy, not a mechanic) is that water came in from the odometer cable, you should check the seal, if the seal is ok, then the cable is broken (the outer part) and its draining the water into your transmision

since trans don't have breathing system and relative low heat water tends to stay in, so its probably a small ammount

when you replace the trans oil, put some DW-40, miracle oil, or something to disperce the water before putting in the new one, check the odometer cable, it should be close to the firewall (the damage)

That makes sense to me; other than a missing bung, or the speedo hole there's no real way to get water into the gearbox!

Replaced the speedo drive gear o ring as it looked quite ropey and there was a little evidence of oil escaping there. Skoda specify a 16 x 2 o ring, but I used a 16 x 2.5 o ring - it seemed to go in with no resistance smeared with gear oil.
