laser scanner / police van

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

so i was driving into and out of southampton today and passed a police van doing speed checks as i went both directions (same van).

i was rather p'd off that my old cobra laser/radar detector sat there silently.

am i correct in thinking all mobiles are laser? it was on the blink yest setting off false laser alerts but the radar seems fine (still picks up traffic lights and tescos doors!!)

what would you suggest as a modern day replacement?

Not sure i need these sat driven gps devices as i have the tomtom on all the time, just worried about laser/radar really (what every they use now)

thanks guys

Was it a Speed Van or one checking Reg plates/ Road Tax/Insurance ?? I have the new Road Angel Pro, Connected. It updates it self every 2/3 minuites due to a built in sim card, no need for a pc

Hey, it was a speed van. not ANPR or anything like that.

my tomtom updates every 15 mins atm but as with the road angel its only good if someone spots the van and marks it.

Can't use laser detectors anymore they became illegal. Chances are by the time your detector goes off, it's too late.

You can of course get jammers but again they are illegal to use.

My Snooper Proline picks up high risks zones which are menat to be the areas where a mobile unit may well be situated.

There is little point in getting a detector for laser/radar as by the time the detector alerts you you've been had.

Garage door openers are the only real protection.

where was it? I went into Southampton today and I didn't see it... :(

Or laser parking sensors. Is it Nissan's adaptive cruise control that use lasers on the same wavelength as the cops?

AFAIK laser detectors are not illegal. Jammers which are intentionally used to Jam are illegal, but those that inadvertantly do (Garage door openers, parking aids) are not.

I disagree with your first point! I have been using an old radar / laser unit for the past 15 years and even though the screening has been improved on the Gatso's, I used to be able to get 500m warning but it is now about 100m. So enough time to brake, just!!

I agree with your second point, that is the way to go.

My bad post, I was reffering to mobile units and not fixed. As you say a laser/radar device may give you some advance warning of fixed installations but IMHO if you get an alert for a mobile unit it's game over.

Good point, unless as you say you have one of the door opener devices!!

My old radar / laser unit does not pick up the handheld units either so may have to update.

I was under the impression a laser detector would pick up the beam if its pointed at another vehicle because of amount it scatters so you can end up detecting it before they decide to point it at your car

firstly the reason it didnt go off is more likely it didnt target you, they first meant to make an assumption to are you speeding or not and then use the gun to collaborate that. I have a very good laser detector and it rarely goes off (twice in the last year) and ive been passed loads of vans. I know it still works as a plod bike with an officer with a 20/20 was stood at the side of the road the other week on way home at night and kept pinging me.

The only thing you can hope for with a laser detector is that you get scatter from the vehicle in front or they will do another speed check as you get closer and take that reading.

The beam from a laser gun only gets to about 1m radius at about 1000 metres and very little scatter is produced (unlike the old radar ones).

I have heard a laser warning from scatter off a car ahead of me, but I wouldn't rely on it happening all the time. The BEL 915 LR works on GATSO's and mobile GATSO vans in Ireland, but as VRStu pointed out, if you hear the laser alert, you don't have time enough to react.

I'm fairly certain it was an ANPR if you're talking about the one in the lodge road area.

Someone did get prosecuted recently for the garage door emitter dodge.

IF they can prove you use it to jam them, they'll really go to town on you.

Or laser parking sensors. Is it Nissan's adaptive cruise control that use lasers on the same wavelength as the cops?

My Old Primera had the laser guided cruise. I was not aware of this at the time. Its something I really miss though!!

On an other note the laser alert on my Snooper has went off once in the past year (genuinely) and yeah it probably is too late if its went off.

If you have a garage door opener and no garage door then your up a creek without a paddle. But if you have a garage door and it functions with the opener then surely your sorted?

Definatly not ANPR, was on the road in from hedge end area. my current laser detector has been off quite a few times the last 2 years, mainly due to lots of cops on the M6 slip roads in scotland. tbh i dont speed as a general practice but its so easy to slip over the limit without realising.

If as you all say it is too late then i guess its time to ditch the laser detector all together.

There has been cases where people using jammer have been prosecuted. The gun gets an error message and police log the details, if it happens again they know you have a jammer and come looking for you.

Yup, and if you have no garage, a garage but no opening system, or a garage that's never been used for the car (dumping ground) you'll be for it as well.
