new clutch imminent??

Featured Replies

The other evening the dual carrageway was empty, so I came off the roundabout & opened it up. I noticed that after each gear gear change, which were quick, but precise at 6300rpm, when after the clutch was released & the power put down it seemed to bog down like the traction control was on, but nothing was flashing on the dash to say it was. It took a couple of seconds for the power to pick up. Is this a sign the clutch might be on its way out??

It doesn't seem to be driving any differently in normal driving conditions or at low revs.

I have also noticed the biting point is at the very top. I have only got to touch the pedal & it starts to disengage the clutch.

If this is the sign of the clutch on its last legs, I'm going to replace it with a G60 singlemass flywheel & VR6 clutch. Does anyone have any negative views on this set-up?

Thanks,

Oz

How many miles on it ???

How many miles on it ???

47k, but Its also had to deal with a remap for just over a year

Doesn't seem that high too me, I would have 80k even with a map.

I'm no expert though !!!!

Mileage or lack of it is no real indicator; what kills clutches is bad driving style. I used to know of one woman who killed a clutch in about 4_000 miles, by taking off in first gear at (estimated) 4_000 rpm, and using clutch slip to control acceleration such that she took 300 yards to reach sufficient speed to select second, and repeat!

OTOH neither my Dad not I have ever needed a new clutch, and as far as we know we never bought a used car with a replacement, or sold one on when the new owner needed one soon.

Try running at about 4_000rpm in an intermediate and putting your foot down hard. If the engine revs rise faster than is proportionate to the road speed, that's an indicator that the clutch is going.

I hope you where touching a very large piece of wood when you made that statement Ken

Big lump of teak - my head! ;)

Oh and for the OP, your rev counter might not be dead accurate, so you may have been brushing the governer just as you changed up, particularly if you flat shift, and don't lift and rev match like I normally do.

I certainly don't drive like that:rofl:. I never race off at the lights either.

I've never had a clutch go on me before. The only one I changed was on my 309gti for an uprated clutch as a precautionary while the engine & gearbox was out due to the mods that I was having done at the time.

I will try what you have said & see what happens:thumbup:

I know the car hasn't done much mileage, but the car is nearly 7years old.

The car used to belong to a company in the middle of Chester for nearly 4 years of its life & guessing it did most of its driving at peak busy times stop/starting & who knows which numpty has driven it, have they been driving it like the woman you mentioned??

Does anyone know the weight of the G60 flywheel?

Have you thought about the Ecs flywheel and clutch Oz?

Option 1 flywheel weighs 14lbs

Option 2 flywheel weighs 20.5lbs

Thanks Martin for the heads up:thumbup:

Is there any drawbacks going to the singlemass flywheel apart for getting alittle more vibration??

Iirc it isn't too bad on the five speed box, the six speed is quite bad apprantly.
