Service and timing belt needed

Featured Replies

Hi Guys,

Looking this month to get my Fabia vRS a 40000 mile service and the timing belt etc changed, any reccomendations of where to get it done (I'm in Morley, near Leeds).

What else should be done water pump ? any other belts ?

Thought's on cost ?

any help appreciated.

I've asked for quotes from DM Keith at Wakefield

and Welcome to MT Motors any one used them on here ?

Thanks,

Alan

Hello mate, I would do your service and timing belt for you as I live in Keighley which is not too far from you. But I'm sure you'll want a Stamp in your book to show for your money which unfortunately i cant provide.

I did my own timing belt last weekend and it wasn't that bad to do but then again I am a qualified mechanic. As you can guess I only paid for the relevant parts. I changed my water pump but only because I wanted peace of mind it had been done and for £25 it may as well be changed whilst the car is in bits but I only went for the normal skoda water pump not the metal GH pump because AFAIK its the 1.8T engines that suffer with Water pump failure

I have seen posts on here quoting around £250 upwards for the timing belt doing and then there is the service on top

I would have thought you wont have any problems with DM Keith as they are a Skoda dealer so should have half a clue but not heard of MT motors sorry. I know a couple of garages which i'm sure wouldnt have a problem doing your tasks for you.

Let us know if you need any further help mate

Timing belt is at 60k?

Timing belt is at 60k?

or 4 years ;)

Hey Guys

Just had my timing belt and water pump changed and a full 60,000 mile service done from my mate whom is a mechanic. :D

All in it was £300 included labour and parts, think this was a good price considering Skoda wanted £300 for changing the belt never mind the service on top of it. :thumbdwn:

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the feedback, and offer of assistance Paul2505 as you say I'd like to get this one done at the dealer but might be back to you for assistance in the future if you don't mind ?.

Word back from DM Keith is

40000 Service £249.95

Timing belt £301.47

Water Pump £35.08

Antifreeze [advised] £27.08

Alternator Belt £19.34

Alternator belt tensioner £38.51

Brake fluid change £49.95

Air Conditioning Service £39.95

including VAT and a loan car this come to £761.33 but with abit of haggling it's down to £650 so have booked it in for Monday, will let you know how things go.

Alan

Jesus those Dealers know how to charge! But I can understand you wanting peace of mind by taking it to them.

I paid

£51 for the timing belt kit

£26 for water pump (50 upfront then 24 back upon taking back the old pump)

£6 for antifreeze

£15 for 10w 40 fully synthetic oil

£4 for oil filter

All genuine parts from the local TPS

I didnt change the alternator belt and tensioner but to be fair they arent a big job to do at a later date if needed.

Maybe i'm totally wrong but £39.99 for the air con service sounds very reasonable I hope they recharge it as part of the service though.

I asked awesome for a price for a cambelt, water pump, tensioner change etc and they said £295 + vat and a full service for £120 + vat which I thought was pretty cheap concidering dealer prices !

Coming up to 50k so I'd prefer to get it done then rather than at 60k

Road trip here I come LOL

Think its a little commical charging for a antifreeze change when your changing a water pump anyhow, and why change the aux belt tensioner unless its faulty???

Got my Cambelt/Waterpump and MOT done at they Bradford branch a few weeks back, was first quoted £420 but go it down to £340 because I showed them a cheaper quote I got from an independent,:).

My Aux. belt is still fine and it's been on there 80k now??

Like Lummox says, if it ain't faulty, leave it alone, it shouldn't be much to replace when it eventually does need doing?

I know it will be off for the cam belt, but why spend extra money if you don't need to?

just my 2p's worth?

Have a look at the warranty companies ideas -had one where the heater rad went - garage charged them for antifreeze to get that bit sent back . (Service manager went ballistic .He charged me for it ,but refunded it in other ways later ) . Same thing with cylinder head -same car ,leaked oil from head - they changed it as leaking water (lost both oil and antifreeze that time ) .

So it's not just the stealers who can be mean .

Hi Guys,

Sorry if I misled you the alternator belt etc is an if required bit (price to be adjusted if not used), DM Keiths said

'The alternator belt would be inspected and advised if required, the tensioner would usually only be changed on a "as required" basis, i.e if it become noisy etc'

Cheers

Had my vRS in at DM Keith (Ossett) on Monday of this week appointment was made last Thursday with their service dept for 40k service and cam belt etc (see my post on this), they were willing to haggle on price which was good.

Dropped the car in on Monday at 7.30am, Sam in service was waiting for me with keys to a Fabia II for me to use for the day, plenty of fuel in it, car was very clean and tidy, as I drove away my car was being driven into the workshop.

Was called at 10.30 to advise that the bump stops and console bushes all needed replacing but warranty had agreed to cover parts and labour, also mentioned an advisory on front pads and disks that they were 40% worn but would last another 12 months, and that 3 of my 4 tyres were 2mm on tread (new this already), once again were willing to haggle on cost of replacing tyres (eventually settled on Goodyear Eagle F1's for £90 a piece inc valves, fitting, balancing and disposal).

Was called at 5.00pm to say every thing had been done and car was ready for collection, on arrival car had been washed, vacuumed and had a nice smelly Skoda air freshener in it (and a 1ltr bottle of Oil and a 1ltr bottle of screen wash).

Total cost, just under £930, and managed to blag a touch up paint thingy.

Have to say I was extreamly pleased with the service from start to finish, expensive ? perhaps, but the parts have a 2 year warranty, the book is stamped so thats always good for the future.

As above, and for the benefit others: don't feel compelled to replace your aux drive belt & tensioner at the cambelt / water pump service. Seeing that the aux belt has to come off anyway, it can then be inspected for wear.

I'm just coming up to 89k in my vrs and only just replaced the aux belt and tensioner last weekend. Tbh, the original belt is still in relatively good condition and would probably have lasted another 10,000 miles easily. The tensioner on the other hand was just starting to get a bit noisy.

Glad you got all those service jobs done and you are happy with the Skoda service. It is unusual for Main dealers to haggle on servicing costs, I'll try that myself next time.
