VRS Electrical Problems?

Featured Replies

Hi There,

I've had my 04 VRS since November last year and some strange things have started happening. First of all there seems to be a sound coming from behind the glove box, its almost like a clicking, knocking sound, you could compare it to a camera shutter sound (Like alot of relays clicking or something) I thought this was just a loose glovebox like other users have had in the forum but I've driven along with the glovebox open and even been stationary and the sound still persists.

I've also started having a few electrical problsm with my poor VRS, one day the central locking would not work on the drivers door so I had to use the key. It sometimes sticks open or closed and I either have to use the key or perform some "dukes of hazard" move over the passenger seat or through the driver side window!

Thats not all, driving home the other night the interior dash lights started to flicker, it looked like a loose connection or something. I started messing with the dash brightness wheel below the right hand side of the steering wheel and it stopped after a while.

Has anyone experienced these sort of problems and if so how much am I going to have to fork out? I'll try and provide some more information after I leave work tonight (The Boss is back from his liquid lunch)

Cheers!

Ricochet

the clicking noise cames from the climatronic flap motor if climatronic works, dont mess with it just live with the noise as long as it remains functional.

Cheers for your responses, I can live with the noise behind the glove box its not that bad, I just thought it was indicative of something wrong.

I feel your pain pdhealy in your thread, armed with that info you posted I should be able to point the mechanic in the right direction.

Thanks again.

Mine's made that ticking noise since new, keep pressing fan down until "off" is displayed and it should stop to confirm the diagnostic. Also hoover out the little grills on the front of the Climatronic as they get clogged with dust and then it won't keep a steady temperature.

JJP means the 2 very small ones next to the Climatronic display, not the ventilation flaps.

The other issues sound like the usual driver's door loom or convenience module issues.

Thanks for the comment Ken,

Its not the fans\vents making any noise, it is coming from behind the gloxebox, almost in the engine bay next to the offside wing. It sounds like loads of relays firing randomly (Its very hard to decribe this sound :) )

It occurs when I'm moving, stationary, with the fans on and off, when the engine is running and when the keys are left in the ignition after the engine has switched off (although it starts to fade)

Am I looking at alot of money to sort the drivers door conveiniance module out? A mechanic in the company car park made that sound with his mouth (Sucking lots of air through his teeth) when I told him about it and he was busy fixing another Octy!

If it sounds like the locking mechanism trying to lock and unlock in rapid succession, thats how my convenience unit behaved just before it started winding the windows down of it's own accord. This noise is much more noticable than the V71 flap motor problem.

If it is the convenience unit & loom problem, then the drivers door LED will probably be off completely, or stay on even when the car is being driven. Some on here have managed to take the connector apart, and remove signs of corrosion (WD40, etc). If you feel confident enough to remove the door card (How-to somewhere on this site I think), then you will be able to get at the controller (plugged into the elec window motor), and check for signs of corrosion. It's worth a try as paying main dealer prices to replace the loom & unit will be expensive.

Hi

you may want to check the electrical connections that are in the door frame. My vrs had window and central looking problems a quick spray of WD40 did the trick. Can get moisture in the connections

Back to basics on Climatronic.

It works (in Auto mode) by blending hot and cold air to achieve the desired temperature. If it's not working right, it can spend a lot of time shuffling the flaps in the blender unit (which is just behind the glovebox on RHD cars) around. One of the easiest ways of improving the operation of this system (and the cheapest) is to clean the grilles for the interior temperature sensor (the 2 little ones on the Climatronic front panel). Now this might not help, but all it's going to cost is 10 minutes of your time so why not? After all the next step is an hour just to investigate since it means removing the driver's door card.

Presuming you need bits to sort out the central locking, the most likely ones are a driver's door wiring loom (fairly cheap; £20?) and/or driver's door window motor/convenience unit (only available together) which is about £300 IIRC.
