Civic Type-R

My girlfriend has an EK9 and she's been thinking of something to do to it to be a bit different so decided to go for a race look, here's whats been done so far....

the car lowered on D2 coilovers (no idea what the guy with the camera is doing with his hand, so dont ask)

today i covered the lower trim on the car in red vinyl, we decided this would be better than painting incase the results weren't really liked or if she wanted to go back to standard, i really wish she'd gotten them painted as it took me a long time and a few choice words throughout the day to complete

and this is more or less than how it is expected to be looking over the next few weeks.

not sure what you should look out for, i guess make sure they arent smokey as that would indicate the engine being fairly worn (or something). they need regular oil changes, more so than most other cars. i think thats about it, i dont know a lot about them.

Really liking the vinyl details, but think it's heresy to change from white to red wheels on something like that :(

I used to have an EK9 VTi with white wheels, many moons ago....

Steve

Very nice!

TBH I preffered the white wheels to red! And also think it looks better without the red vinyl!

Just my opinion of course...

I think I quite like that colour scheme. Ask me tomorow and I might have changed my mind.

I had a green EK9 Vti.

has to be up there with one of the best cars i've owned.

Keith, loving the work on this one, would love an EK9 TypeR, but just cant justify the cost of them at the moment.

Really holding their value just now.

EK9 is the model number of the type-r, is the vti not an EK4 or EJ* something or other?

yeah the cost of them aint cheap she paid about £9k to have the car brought over from japan almost a year ago, has a good history and was always serviced by Primo.

You're quite right :o - and it's taken me years to realise!

I had a 98S 3dr with the B16A2 VTEC unit. This was before perhaps any forums for them existing, and I certainly didn't go onto the internet looking for info on them.

Having just done a quick search, the TypeR was indeed given a special code, of EK9 - and included quite a few additions/changes at time of assembly, including weight saving and chassis stiffening. I can't seem to see what the more normal varients were given. It's definitely EK* as that denotes a 3dr bodyshell, so EK4 looks most likely.

Cheers,

Steve

Aye...EK4...that was it ! :D :D

Mine was a 99 "v" plate. A few choice mods gave it a healthy 174bhp.

hers is a 2000 model RX, think it ran the rollers at 184bhp, which was 1bhp down from standard... mods include a J's racing airbox, 5zigen fireball exhaust system with a DC sports de-cat. its been recommended to have it mapped to make full use of the mods so that may get done in time.

the vti's can shift too although i've found with the '9 you have to really kick the crap out of them to go any, if you take it easy the speedo seems to climb rather slowly, still lovely cars to drive, seems to handle incredibly well too.

Yup I enjoyed my VTi - but as you say, they do need to be worked quite hard :D

Used to have a B16 EG6 VTI and later on I had a B18 MB6 VTI-S. Both good cars- the MB6 was nicer to drive with the more torquey engine, but the EG was defo more fun, and waaaay cooler.

they do need to be worked quite hard :D

Think thats just the nature of those engines.

I mean look at the S2000 vtec unit... 230bhp at 8300rpm!!!

Although the newer one was reduced a bit I think.

But beauty is that they will quite happily rev all day long.

Am I right in thinking that none of the VTEC units have ever failed although don't know what they class as a "failure".

Phil

Absolutely - you need to get past 5k before anything happens, otherwise it's just a glorified shopping car :D
