RNS 510 rear head rest screens?

Featured Replies

Hi All - long while since I joined / last posted.

I'm getting an RNS 510, and just wondered if anyone either had experimented with putting rear screens attached to the RNS 510, or knew if it was possible? If so, does the handbrake switch affect DVD playback for the rear screens, or just the head unit?

for anyone searching and stumbling across this, the answer is that the B units (later firmware) do support RSE out - you can either do some custom wiring or there are adapters sold by a couple of sits - search google for RNS510 RSE.

Older A units (the one I bought is one of these) need to be firmware upgraded before this works, but not everyone is sure whether the upgrade works on skoda units. vwnavi has a couple of threads about this.

sounds very interesting. Question is if you could have dvd playback on the head units while driving or if this requires a bypass?

I have the upgraded A unit skoda firmware, and in the menu of the latest (904) firmware is AV out and AV in options that was not present on the earlier (1024) firmware. The 904 firmware adds a lot of B unit functionality to the older A units. I have 904 installed on mine, although it needed a small modification to work correctly with the maxidot.

How do I check my firmware version ?

Is there a button combination on start-up ?

I have tried holding some buttons for a few seconds, a bit like for the MFD and right stalk.

I have post codes (V3?) etc. does that say anything?

To check firmware you need to access the secret menu.

Turn the unit on, now press the < > and i buttons at the same time to reboot the unit. Just as the skoda logo appears, press and hold the setup button until you get the message "system starting" then let go. You will now be in the secret menu, its one of the options.

Great, lots to look at.

Which bit is the firmware?

Can I play with any of it? DAB? etc.

Or should I just forget about the "Secret" and leave it alone.

I have been looking around.

Found this site JNCS in the Netherlands.

They seem to have a kit for the RNS510 so you can connect rear screens that work while you listen to CD/Radio etc.

You may need to buy extra bits???

Apart from the integration into the headrest, would it not be much easier to buy a twin screen in-car DVD player from Argos for under £200 - you can even buy a pair of screens now which can play different films to save the kids having to agree !

Thats not the point.

Integrate!! is the answer and keep it clean.

We could buy a Tom Tom, a Bluetooth Kit, A CD player, A Radio, A DVD player, A traffic warning system.

Isn't that the RNS510 with a bluetooth kit ?

My Touran had a roof-mounted DVD player - sold the Touran, and hey, no more DVD player !

Integration is nice, but the cost of integration to fit headrest-mounted screens properly, presumably hiding wiring etc, would surely outweigh the looks. And as and when you change cars, you'll be left without, unless you have it all reversed.
