Where's this extra boost come from?

Featured Replies

 Driving the VRS back from work today, I noticed a lot more boost when the turbo kicked in and could hear more of a whooshing from it.

Not having had the car long, never having had a turbo and being no mechanic, I'm a bit confused. I'd only driven 2 other VRS's and all seemed slightly different in performance and turbo noise. I never felt that mine was actually much faster than my old Celica when overtaking, but based on today's performance, it blows it away!

My turbo has, until today, always been very quiet, with just a little whoosh as you let off the accelerator. Another VRS I drove had a very definite whistle as you accelerated. Something mine seems to lack, until today, when as well as the extra kick, I could definintely hear something going on before a louder whoosh.

I guess I'm just trying to ask what is the norm and should I be concerned? The car was standing for some months I believe before I bought it, so could it have just got a bit seized and is now coming back to life? That's what it feels like from the driver's seat. I've already had to hassle the dealer I bought it from a bit, so do I add this to the list or just be grateful that the car seems to have more 'go' than I originally realised?

I've only driven two. Both had a nice whistle to them on boost but the one I bought has a slightly crisper ooosshhhh from the recirc valve on gear changes.

It may have a boost leak some where that is a little intermitant, if you catch my drift, It needs a diagnostic scan to be safe really.

I tend to find that if I drive like a granny, then have a spirited drive then it seems a bit lazy, where as if im constantly having a spirited drive the engine seems more alive/ responsive. Unless its just me....

Me too also vpower is darn fine tucker for a turbo engine.

Personally I prefer a 100ml bottle of (pure) acetone per tank...:D

It could be that it has been in soft limp mode, and that has cleared giving you a run at proper boost levels. my 4x4 in soft limp is still quick but doesnt feel as urgent as when it boosts properly. you need to get the codes read to know where to start looking for answers though.

Is yours remapped?

It's an adaptive ECU so it's not just you

Hmm - add an adaptive fuzzy-logic auto gearbox to the mix and this explains a lot (elegance 1.8t this is). Still get whipped by Mondeo TDCi's on the lanes though, just can't match the diesel punch out of low-speed corners without continually beating kick-down to 1st.

Is yours remapped?

It is indeed.

How adaptive is this adaptive ecu really? And how quickly does it adapt?

I don't know the technicals exactly and a throttle body adaptation will help you out along the way, but I generally find it's a couple of tanks of fuel before a car is running at it's best.

Forgot to mention in my other post that some nice cold air will certainly be helping :)
