Oil light on!

Featured Replies

Hey folks.

While drivin the car today I noticed that the oil light was on when the engine was idling.

It goes off when the engine is revved even the slightest bit.

Just changed the oil and filter along with everything else (air filter, ht leads, spark plugs, fuel filter) and also did the valve clearances too.

Do you think that perhaps it could be related to the valve clearances that I set. I did them all at 0.2 mm.

Also I have checked the oil this morning with no signs of a leak at all and there is plenty of oil getting to the top (which rules out a blocking IMO).

Thanks

Phil

Update:

Just been out in the car and it stopped doing it but then started again once it was back up to temperature!

Could this be the oil pressure switch at all? How do I test it?

Phil

the oil isnt leaking is it?

  • Author

Not a single drop anywhere no!

And the oil is right up to the top of the dipstick too.

My guess is the pressure switch as the engine is running very healthy and plenty of oil getting to the top of the engine.

Phil

I'd start by replacing the pressure switch - cheap enough to buy and easy to change.

Damn! I'll have to drain the oil again... or have something on hand to bung the hole while i change it!

How big is the hole? Anyone know?

Thanks

Phil

Phil, you should be able to change the switch without a drain down of the oil :)

I had this with my Favorit (same problems as you) - simply changed the switch - £2 / £3 from the dealer and you don't have to drain the oil. It might need a top up though!

Yeh will have the new one on hand to stick straight in and have something to catch any oil that "escapes" and then just top the oil back up.

Have just popped round the corner to the skoda garage and they don't have one in but have ordered it so should have it on friday hopefully.

Phil

be careful if you screw a bolt in there though, they have a fine pitch thread (M10x1 iirc) so a normal bolt wont go in

Was just going to stick a rubber type cork in there or something or like I say maybe just have the new one ready to stick straight in and make sure I get the washer for it too so I don't have to take the old one off.

Hopefully that's all it will be!

Phil

i dont think the oil pressure switch has a washer anyway

It should have a tapered thread, just don't over do it :)

Cool. Will double check at the dealer when i pick it up.

Thanks

I've done this on a Ford. Work on a stone-cold engine, so the oil's drained back, and is as thick as it will get, and have the new switch to hand; You can do it without losing more than a couple of teaspoonsful of oil.

just to let you know. 0.20mm ( 8 thou) is the correct valve clearance for the feli, if it has all stell push rods, the rods that are aluminium alloy should be set to 0.25mm (10 thou) most of the time you find them in the intake valves

Randomly the light has stopped coming on now!

Will replace the switch anyway as its obviously on the blink a bit for the sake of a few quid. Dealer said they should have it tomorrow.

Phil

That's entirely typical of the "piece of loose sediment in the capillary" issue with the switch.

On a rather similar topic my oil light never comes on and has always been like that. I have changed the instrument panel, checked the bulb by substitution. I cleaned the contact on the spade terminals and earthed the wire to the engine block which did not bring the light on. I suspect there's a break in the wire somewhere between the switch and instrument panel but don't fancy pulling the loom it disappears into appart to look. Was planning to run a new wire between the switch and instrument panel with the help of Haynes wiring diagram but as this topic is here thought I might post in the hope someone has a better idea :)

Never never, even when you first switch on? That's got to be the signal wire.

Yup. Porbably occured do to the oil changed perhaps!

Got the switch today so will get it swapped over tomorrow. Only cost £4.03 so might as well!

I'm guessing you had a tonne of nasty stuff sitting around the oil after the 17k interval you "chose" that decided it wasn't going to move from that sensor :(

Yup! I guess so too.

The oil was very black and sludgy and no bloody wonder.

Shame on me really. Generally look after it especially now I'm getting a bit handier with a spanner!

Will get it swapped in the morning now once the engine has cooled.

Phil

P.s. the switch does have a washer but it came with it so didn't need to get that seperately!

can i throw a proverbial spanner in the works here, i doubt very much that it is caused by **** lodged inside the engine, if you had bits floating about in there big enough to cause an obstruction you would well and truely know about it

i dont think you will loose much oil i changed mine on my skoda and hardly enything came out with ir been above the sump, my oil pressure light use to do the same aswell it only done it when the engine is warm its because the oil in the engine is thiner and the oil pump and all the engine parts are warn..
