Problems in paradise :D

Featured Replies

Right the Fabia isnt looking its best at the minute

Problem is ive had an on going water leak which i found out to be a coolant hose that had rubbed on my BMC induction kit... before i fixed this i replaced the coolant header tank for a new item as i suspected the leak was theyre....

So new header tank BUT used the old coolant cap... (older style fabia one)

Still leaked....

Then found the split hose under the BMC so replaced this... now im thinking sorted :)

But it still leaks... also to note the cap for the header tank was a really tight fit and as i know theyre's 2 caps im thinking i might have the wrong cap for the wrong coolant bottle??

Well anyways after having to regulary top it up and after a bit of welly on the way home, water is boiling and coming out of the header tank, im guessing through the cap?! so steam everywhere... also over the last mile or so of the journey after cooling off the engine sounds dog rough / induction noise .... just not right at all :(

any thoughts

These replies are going to be bad i guess

boiling water dont sound too good, is the oil all topped up?

yeah oil is changed every 5k miles, i was doing a fair bit of motoring....

also i have done the CCV mod which i forgot to mention, and the breather of that is kicking out a fair bit of smoke.... cant remember if that was normal or not ?

could be the ware pump leaking and not cerculating the coolant.?

Was it smoking ?

Head gasket maybe ?

hmm good point, had a new waterpump at cambelt change time which was around 2 months ago... could it have been like this since then? it did cross my mind...

temp guage acts as normal, and sits at 90 as it should, also no signs of anything in the oil :(

Im really confused.... car doesnt smoke much either and ive checked most of the boost hoses incase the noise is coming from theyre

maybe i lost a bit of exhaust insides

Done a VAG-COM scan for codes? Just in case there's anything to go in there....

Steve

Sounds like head gasket

If your old coolant bottle was not leaking & that had the correct Cap, Put it back on & refil, Run the system for a while until warm with the cap off whilst squeezing hose's Etc to get rid of any trapped air, Also make sure your heater knob is turned to full heat in the cabin.

Then turn the car off, Refit the cap & go for a run..

My thinking is, If the cap is the wrong one currently, the system my not be pressurised/sealed & after the spirited run , got hot enough to expand the water/fluid fully, So leaked..

Certainly try this before going down the full Doom & Gloom Route ;)

If it does not boil/leak, Bonus, you have found the issue, Just remember to top up again in the morning, as it will setlle further over night

Let us know the result.

Checked over the radiator? Not sure if a stone could get in a cause a bit of damage?

The cap could be your problem.

It should keep a constant pressure and heat in.

If 100degrees water/coolant becomes open to the elements of cold air it is going to act irratically causing the boiling sensation.

Just a though...

thats a good idea that :D dont have the old bottle but ive ordered a new cap AND bottle so im going to fit that ASAP drop the coolant and replace it... the pumping the pipes is a good idea as i never did this last time ? is that the correct way to do it?? i would like to replace all the coolant with new stuff... also gona fit some jubilees insted of the OEM clips at the expansion tank...

My old GTD did this - the seal inside the cap was cracked and it wouldnt pressurise the system properly when they car got really hot. Replaced the cap - sorted!

This is what im hoping for :D fingers crossed

Quick fix to see if it is the cap without changing it - get some petroleum jelly and put it with you finger around where the seal is. If it works then the seal is knackered and the cap needs changed!

If the system isn't sealing properly the water will boil PDQ, physics 101

Get the proper cap for the expansion tank, and all will be well, I think.
