What tools should I buy

Featured Replies

I've got a socket set (half decent), cheap torque wrench, more torx bits than you shake a ****ty stick at(I have no idea why I have so many tbh)

I was thinking about adding too my collection for working on the car, (mk1 octy vrs)

What is a good range of spanner sizes for my particular car, and what else would you recommend eg wobble bars or extension sets.

I don't want too spend a fortune as they will only be used now and then.

Any other thoughts welcome

Edit too add ...............Machine mart is local too me and linkable via web so that would be good if you could post some links as I can't be arsed going anywhere else too buy stuff lol

It doesn't sound the same ;)

Halfrauds tools are the best value IMHO and will probably work out cheaper than Machine Mart..

My socket set is halfrauds and it seems too be lasting the small amount of abuse I give it, I'll have a gander on their site as well then.

Cheers Stu

The "Professional" range at Halfords has a lifetime guarantee IIRC

And prices are better if you know anyone with a trade card.

Just pop in there with your money in your sky rocket and buy some that you think you'll use. Try to stick to the Pro or Laser stuff.

The Halfrauds Pro screwdrivers are ok.

Trade card is the way forward if you can get one.

Or if you have a spare £2300, how about Detailing World

Nice little setup that.

I want a new one of them. :)

So you have an old one! Commendable!

As others have said, Halfords pro range has a very good reputation.

As for spanners (and sockets), buy combination spanners (and maybe ratchet spanners) in 8-19mm, that will cover most things. For the other oddities (like sockets for hub nuts), buy them individually.

If you don't already have an oil filter socket, get one.

Actually, what size is socket does the filter plug take? (I thought this would be an appropriate place to ask given the nature of the thread!)

Seperately, the Halfords Pro stuff is good although the warranty isn't as good as that of Snap-On in my experience but at a significant reduction in cost I can accept that. If you're looking for a decent set of allen keys then a company called Park Tool do the best that I have used and kick Snap-On into the weeds on longevity.

Needle nose pliers, multimeter and lighter-gas powered soldering iron are all very useful

Start with a REME spanner, oka a hammer.

WTF is an REME spanner

A Hammer I think... I think it should have read AKA a Hammer!

Caliper wind back tool!!!! essential for doing the rear. (que smutty comments!)

Make up your own uk-mkiv "Dogfood Tin" pressure tester :D (theres a joke in there as well)

REME spanner, AKA hammer, AKA Manchester screwdriver

i've got a halfords socket set that i always leave in my car, it's great for using down the scrapyard and hey are so cheap it doesn't matter if you loose a few, i find them great if you need to bodge up a special tool too... like cutting the end of a spanner and welding it onto a long bar etc..

Personally I'd get some proper good quality tools (not halfords or machine mart), because they will probably last forever, and be worth more as antiques in 100 years! I love tools!

I have a lovely Stahlwille spanner set (Stahlwille catalogue)

Britool tool chest and socket sets, screwdriver set and bit driver (Britool - Product Catalogue)

And a few other bits from Beta (Beta-Tools.co.uk, Serious Tools for Professionals), CK, Wurth, Stanley etc.

If you want drill bits that will last, look for Dormer (Welcome to New Dormer Site) or Titex drills (TiN coated or Tungsten Carbide if your feeling flush!)

You can never waste money on tools. Only invest!

I can't afford that lot lol

Next question ........Ball joint separators ....Fork type or the puller type ????

Oh yeah, another one, are all the sizes metric on the octy

I think so but as always the size you need to do the job at hand is the very size that your nice shiny socket set doesn't have. 7mm allen key for the caliper bolts and 18mm socket for the carrier bolts to name a couple :D

you could always borrow one from the guy who built several kit cars and has loads of tools in the garage and lives just past your sisters house

Thats an even better idea :thumbup::thumbup:

I'll keep you in mind mate ;)

I won't recommend brands, except in one case, but with what you've got, I'd just add a set of metric combination spanners, and an 8" Molegrip (Genuine Mole, other toggle grips just aren't the same).
