as power steering was making a racket job done no noise apart from under load belt squeels still and in low speed manouvers sterering jolts and stops but fine if i ad more revs. please help i cant afford anything else to go wrong. A friend says the system could need bleeding.

there is also no power steering warning light coming on

If the belt is squealing then it is loose, take it back and get them to tighten it correctly.

Change the alternator pulley which contains a one-way clutch.

The other items changed are unlikely to have been faulty.

There is no power steeering warning light - the Superb has an old fashioned (reliable) hydraulic assist system. It is also self-bleeding after a few operations lock to lock.

Roto, do you have the part No. (& price) for the pulley?

I'm pretty sure that is what it rattling on mine at around 1,800rpm.

The pulley is a standard INA manufactured part and can be obtained widely - I think GSF stock them. I got one from a local alternator rebuilder.

You need 2 splined keys to fit it - one tri-square to hold the shaft and one hollow splined driver to shift the ring nut. I didn't have the tri square at the time, so I dismantled the alternator and put the rotor in the vice...

Before you spend out, use a power washer to hit the alternator pulley with, run it up and let it dry, only use cold water btw, you are trying to remove grit not strip the bearing dry, see if this is any different, if it isn't get some WD40 or similar and spray it down the edge of the pulley that meet's the alternator body, and then finally if this doesn't stop it spray WD on the alternator belt itself, if all this fails you will need to start replacing things, a friend of mine had a tensioner replaced and it squealed afterwards btw, hth.

god you got to love the power of wd40 solved the prob straight away thaks people think the new belt must have been mucky or tacky its spot on now

would i be able to do this job i have some mechanical knoledge

I'm not sure how 2 exactly, but there is a problem with the car that is limited access so it might require putting into service position to do it, Roto will know, I've a feeling you maybe lucky and it'll be as simple as undoing the alternator and putting a new belt on.

Usually to bleed the steering you simply turn the steering slowly from lock to lock with the engine running. This will purge the air into the power steering resevoir. Check to make sure you have enough fluid in the resevoir as well.:)

If the belt is still sqealing are you sure it's tight enough.

Where did you get the pulley from and how much was it? (i can't find it on GSF)

What removal tool did you buy (and how much again) i have seen these Sealey SX400 kits for under £24 (posted), or for a bit more this 13 piece kit
