Argh....Engine Mount went!!!

Featured Replies

That pic is correct , but the part number listing is not correct, as I ordered these parts today from VW(same parts and mount)

I added the parts to the pic and indicated where i think mine has broken. Won't be able to be sure until i get time to check on Friday.

If it was my car I'd be checking to see if the mounting was re-aligned correctly by the garage 3 months ago when they did the cam belt.

There are two measurements the garage should have checked, and a visual check of the position of the stretch bolts in relation to the inner edge of the engine mount (section 2A-17 of the haynes manual, illustration H32032).

You wont be able to check either measurement now your engine has dropped but you could still check the bolt - mounting position. Might also be worth asking your local garage how they aligned the mounting.....if you get a blanc expression back, then its a fair chance it was'nt done.

The part number for the two mount to mount bolts was N10209603, which has superceded to N10209605 at around £1.54 each + VAT.

Since it'll cost me all of £4, I might just change these and torque them up myself just to be sure (should try to get some use out of the torque wrench I bought). Isn't the easiset way to do this simply to do one at a time so as to avoid having to jack the engine up and accidentally missaligning something?

Thats how I did mine, after my mate said "nah no need too change those", so I did them myself......................He's a cowboy lol

Okay, update.

Found out late yesterday that the actual failure was the 3 bolts snapping off on the block that go through the Engine mount support bracket. This Bracket is bolted to the block and then the engine mount bolts onto it.

These 3 bolts are typically the ones removed when a cambelt / tensioner change happens, however do not get replaced as a course and are able to be reused(This coming from a couple of VAG dealers I called) So I went back to the Garage that replaced the cambelt a few months ago and had a diplomatoic chat, which ended in the car being taken there today to be stripped down.

The mechanic confirmed the bolts were broken in the block and these will hopefully be carefully taken out. With the belt off I could see the side face of the block. Damage has occurred to the tensioner damper bracket, which can be replaced but everything else looks ok. So hopefully a refit with new bolts and a new top mount and bolts with a check on timing will put it back to former glory.

Never heard of this issue before , and hopefully never again.

I'll double check for you but we allways replace the three bolts into the block, pretty sure ELSA tells you to renew, i'll check on the system tomorrow and report back.

Well update to the engine mount faillure.

This was a failure of the 3 bolts that get removed from the lower support bracket needed to be removed for a Cambelt change. These 3 bolts had snapped in the block and could possibly be down to overtightening and or none replacement at cam belt change.(been changed twice now) Interesting as dealers seem to not recongnise these need replacing( seems true as they would include them in the cambelt kit).

This occured 3 months after cam belt change. I am suspicous that probably 1 bolt went first and then allowed some flexing to then stress the other 2 bolts, but can't prove this. Anyway The Garage got someone in to dril out the snapped bolts. I was not charged for the work and labour stripping the car down and back up again and rechecking timing. Very impressed with the Garages support. I did pay for the parts which came to around £100, which could have been much worse.

So with new Top mount, new bolts for top and bottom mount and a replacement Cambelt tensioner damper I am back on the road.:D

YEA nice one mate!

glad to see you all sorted. Back to happy moterin again lol

all best
