I have a mate with a 320d and it is remapped with a basic stage 1 generic remap. It's surprisingly quick. Would a stock VRS beat it in a drag? I'm doubting it? What about a remapped VRS?

And yes, this is a schoolboys thread! ;) Would be good to if I can expect to wipe the smile of my mates face when we are on the commute :)

i can tell you about a standard 320d vs a remapped vrs

and yes the vrs won, brother wasnt very happy!

problem being that the remapped 320d will be circa 300lbft and will handle a lot better.

generic to generic the 320d will win id say but generic 320d v custom vRS with certain mods then id say the vrs just.

Traffic light grand prix?

Two laps of MaccyD's car park?

Or real twisties?

I wouldn't waste time racing BMW diesels, over the xmas holidays I managed to hold off a 53 plate BMW M3 Coupe for about 15 laps of Brands Hatch Indy at a Trackday...

I only have a cheap remap and all else standard even got cheap Kuhmo tyres!

Feel free to discuss any of the above :)

My mate has an Estate 320d remapped, and it handles quite well for an estate and seems to push on quite nicely.

I seemed to upset a guy in a 320d in my standard vRS :P Got to love the long gear ratio's coming off of 70 limit roundabouts. Stick it in second, boot to the floor and watch the other car drop half a car length or more as it has to shift :D

EDIT- whilst we are on the subject of school boy willy waving antics if you ever get the chance to go toe to toe- Mini Cooper S (turbo model) vs Standard Octy vRS give it a punt. Friend of mine has one and there is literally bugger all in it :D

Assuming you are talking about an E46, it would be a close thing up to legal speed limits. The vRS might edge ahead eventually but by then you are talking Autobahn speeds.

And an E90 320d - forget it. Remaps to slightly more bhp than a remapped vRS, and almost one and a half times the torque of a remapped vRS... you'd need a bigger turbo

Ow er.... I assume he has an E46... not sure how I'd tell. Do they look the same or completely different? I think his is an 05 plate silver estate with 18inch rims if that helps.

I don't care which one is faster - I know I'd much rather be sat in the BMW :D

Will be an E46 then, the E90 is the latest version it came along in 2006.

Brand snobbery? ;)

No, but if I had a large amount of money to spend on a car I'd take a 3 series over an Octavia every time.

Nicer cabin, nicer drive (apparently - would need to try for myself), smoother diesel engines....

For what it's worth I am considering upgrading to a diesel CRTDI vRS in 3 or 4 years time ;)

He was either:

  1. Warming his tyres
  2. A very poor driver
  3. Uninsured for a track day and was taking it easy
  4. The safety car

Trust me mate an M3 will romp away from a VRS on standard suspension if it really wants to

Whilst all that is true, it is entirley possible that it was just the driver in the M3 being a little like the US Army, All the gear and no idea.

I remember seeing pictures of Octavia SDi's from this very site harassing and humiliating 911's on trackdays.

A good track driver (Which I am not) has got to be worth 100 ponies or so over a yuppie with the right tackle ;)

They are really nice cars the beemer 320ds. I wouldn't have used the words "smoother" in comparison to a 20 valve turbo engine though. If anything the narrower torque band is less smooth than a 20vt with flatter curve (depends on remap though). I kind of promised myself I would never buy a BMW though on the basis that I would fade away amongst all other BMWs given that they all look very similar, making the choice of BMW largely irrelevant, as to the untrained eye it just becomes "a beemer". They are so boring when it comes to styling imo. Anyway back to the debate.... I hope to report back on this first hand when I buy me an Octavia. I'm still looking.

I did a new red BMW 3 series a while back and he had a run on me the **** tried goin up the inside of me! and I was commin up to cars bout 200m ahead and we were doin 70+ on the A30.

well as hyou come off the M5 to the A30 went round the long bend and got back up to speed adn he was behind me as I was overtakin him. he then floored it but i preempted it so ran him up the **** of another car so he had to slow as the gap wasnt that much but enough to let me pass then me pull in so he could pass again. but no he didnt wona wait so I made him wait even longer lol

he tried goin up the inside 2 or 3 times. each time gettin along side me before i putt a bit more on. not even to the floor and I still got up to speed and got in front before he was clear of me.

iirc it was a 325d saloon. nice car but an arogent D1ck drivin titi. lol

wasnt smilin after.

then I settled down to a nice cruise down to truro.

If it helps I know full well a 1 series 120d will quite happily leave a VRS standing on the backroads, so I think a 123d would clean up.

I mean surely if you want a fair comparison you'd want the 335i, 335d or M3 vs the VRS as these are the "sporty" models. At that point I think you can conclude with the drivers being equal the VRS is toast.

Ahhh ... a sensible post on the subject .... but no thanks button :)

BMW every time, no contest :)

And I have only had three of them :)

Where is the 'couldnt care less' option - a pedestrian could overtake a ferrari...

Are we talking Mk1 or 2 octy here .

:orb_duh: Just seen it Mk1 .Now if it was a fabia 2.0l that would be a different story.:D

Yeah but if I wanted to discuss that I would have made a thread on the different cars ;) It's completely fair and a valid argument as it's relevant to myself and a mate. Doesn't matter if it's a Nova Vs a BMW it's still the classic mate Vs mate argument hence the post really out of interest. :)

I'm not that bothered really but I will inevitably end up having a race.
