Wheel bearing or something else?

Featured Replies

I've had the alignment done today at a main dealer, cost £75 plus VAT. The rear was out on both sides.

I had my alignment checked by a dealer - twice and each time they did it incorrectly!

The OP's noise is probably sawtoothing on the tyres. Mine did it and luckily the lease company changed them.

I was just going to put up with it until i need a new set but thats not a bad idea about swapping the sides. May see about getting that sorted during the week.

Are we saying that the noise should go away/be less if the feathered edges are on the outer egde?

I am running dunlop sport maxx and sport 9000's so i expect this is also making it worse than it would be on bridgestones for instance.

I had the very same problem it was the front nearside wheel bearing.

It was Dunlop Sport Maxx on mine.

The camber makes the feathering rumble so by putting the worn edge on the outside it should improve it quite a bit

I had the bearing checked by skoda and they said it was the tyres. So now it is alligned correctly, when the tyres get moved about this week at some point we shall soon see.

It does sound like the nearside bearing but as its such a drone its hard to tell where its coming from exactly. I will see what happens when i get the tyrese swapped over on the back. If its the wheel bearing i may be able to get my money back from the geo check that they told me to have!

It seems that divine providence has deemed it fit to intervene. The offending tyre now has two nails in it, right on the edge forcing me to order a replacement. It happened over the weekend.

Oh well :)

**** happens

Every cloud, and all that! Just hope the new rubber cures the problem :)

I'm going to get my alignment/geometry checked against the revised recommendations and see if that improves things any. If not, then I hope it'll be resolved when fresh rubber eventually goes on.

I can recommend Nigel Langs in Bolton for NW wheel alignment. they are highly recommended by Tony at Wheels in Motion who I believe is regarded as an authority on such matters. When my car was in there, the operator spoke to Tony to confirm the settings.

£65 for my session but that can change depending on how many adjustments are required.

Thanks Steve, may well consider that. Doesn't sound like an unreasonable figure, especially if it's done with a degree of care and consideration :)

I have just gone through the whole "something wrong with a wheel bearing" insanity and finally found time to go to the dealer. Found out about the "saw toothing" of the rear tyres and the revised camber settings. Whilst having the camber settings changed ( by the way at STS in Hitchin - great service- took 20 mins & £75 -all geometry now spot-on - and even have a screen in the waiting room so that you can witness the adjustments being made!) - anyway - the technician noted that the front tyres were at 1.6 mm - pretty poor mileage at just over 12k. So had new tyres put on back and "saw toothed" from rear put on front.

Result - the tyre noise is even worse, only now from the front! It's so bad that there is now a rattle from the steering column. Does anyone know if the noise will lessen with wear, particularly as the wear rate is pretty high. Do I put up with it or go into bat with Skoda?

By the way the tyres were Bridgestone Potenza 225/45 R17. Now have Conti Sport Contact on rear. I can't tell if they are quieter because of the racket coming from the front!

Finally, what a great website! It would be very useful if all the threads on rear tyre noise were pulled together. Perhaps even a march on Skoda UK before we all have damaged hearing!!!

All responses and advice very gratefully received. Can't even drown out the noise because of the rubbish and harsh sound from the speakers. But the car is basically good - but I don't half miss my Mk1 vRS!!

Don't think Conti Sport Contacts are known for their quietness to be honest! Depends which generation you have on there too? The SC2s I had on my Focus when I had it were the loudest tyre I think I've ever used

How much tread have the Potenzas? Seems to be a case of getting the correct suspension adjustment sorted, and then getting new rubber I'm afraid. Not a good state of affairs.

Does anyone know when these revised settings were released? A technical note would be very helpful ;) Despite my good service from Simpsons of Colne, I'm still at the stage of arguing the toss about this. I've not pursued it massively yet, at this stage, but I will have opportunity to do so soon, as mine's returning to have a rattling Climatronic part seen to (finally I hope, after two attempts, sounds like they'll finally agree to replace the whole unit!)

Cheers,

Steve

Had my tyres swapped over today. Back left and right taken off the rims and rotated so the feathered edges are now on the outside of the tyres. Not much change in road noise to be honest. Perhaps a little better but that may just be a placebo effect!

This certainly is a growing issue with the octy. The guy at skoda showed me the bulletin released by skoda outlining the issue with the excellent resolution at the bottom of the document saying no fix or new settings needed. Something silly like that. Nice to see skoda know there is an issue but dont' want to do anything about it. Its costing a fortune in tyre swapping, tracking, geo checks etc.

The only answer really must be to have the geometry set then bin the tyres for some new ones regardless of what tread is left.

Shame it didn't work.

I intend to have my wheels swapped front to rear every 5k miles or so to even the wear out and prevent the feathering issue becoming anything serious.

This is mildy inconvenient but should only cost a few quid every couple of months from a friendly tyre fitter. Or could do it myself of course !

With the correct settings and new rubber, I wouldn't have thought it would then be an issue with uneven wear. Certainly worth keeping an eye on though.

I'm getting a fairly load whirring sound, starts around 30 mph and gets much worse around 50.

It sounds just like a wheel bearing, but i've checked them and they all seem fine.

What else could it be?

Thanks,

Gilly.

I have exactly the same thing on my 4x4 FSi. I've had it checked twice by Skoda and new tyres on the front but still the same. Beginning to wonder if it's something that's alwys been there but I hadn't noticed before. Drives fine though. Thought maybe it was noise from the 4x4 - what are you driving?

A mark 2 Octavia. The noise is from the back though.

I do wonder if the type of tyre makes a difference. This has only happened since swapping to Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3's. Previously I had Bridgestone Potenza's.

Any thoughts anyone?

Hmm..difficult isn't it? I just take some consolation that it isn't a wheel bearing. I need some new rears soon anyway so hopefully will soon have a set of new/nearly new Falkens so will see how they sound!

Gilly - there does seem to be a fair number of people reporting this who are running F1s, myself included! They're on the back of mine, Falken FK452s on the front.

The tyre fitter today said that F1's are very prone to feathering.

Not quite the same, but my MkII golf was running on F1's with no problem. I AM however getting this issue on my '58 L&K which IS currently fitted with Potenza's (from new). Seems to whine slightly at about 20mph, disappear, and then reappear between 40-50 mph so it's been driving me nuts!Anyone know where to get these revised camber/alignment settings so I can take them to my local tyre place? They have computer alignment, so not the rubbish visual laser nonsense you gt some places, and i've never had a problem, but it'd be handy to take it with me?
