Wheel bearing or something else?

Featured Replies

I'm getting a fairly load whirring sound, starts around 30 mph and gets much worse around 50.

It sounds just like a wheel bearing, but i've checked them and they all seem fine.

What else could it be?

Thanks,

Gilly.

Most likely to be the tyres, is the sound from the rear? Swop the tyre from front to rear and see if it makes a difference. The tread blocks on the rears tend to feather and cause a noise, it could be that the alignment is out.

I'll second crap alignment, mine is doing it at the moment and needs a 4 wheel geo check.

Yes, the sound is from the rear. Thanks for the advice :)

Had this on my old works car.

Squeezed every bit of life out of them byt the last 12k was very painful

I had the same, it was due to a set of over inflated Eagle F1's.....the centre had worn due to over inflation, iirc about 35psi.

Interesting as I have F1's. 35 psi doesn't seem that high, what's the preference for these tyres?

I've put the spare on and the noise went away, so it is definitely the tyres.

my f1's on the rears did the same. emitted a high pitched in yer face warble until i changed them for some falken 452's and it went away. reading on here at the time others mentioned they may have feathered as per moleys post above

how much wear is left?

Loads, they're practically new.

Check the shoulder of the tyre isnt wearing unevenly.

How are you checking the bearings?

By jacking each wheel and checking for movement.

If the tyres are feathered, are they buggered?

The funny thing was that 35PSI felt absoutely great in them....hence why I left them, but jaysus I paid for that with crap wear and even worse road noise......reduce it to 30-32, although sounds like the damage is done.

Interesting, as I have a rumbling noise at present but it tends to be present (or noticeable) at lower (20/30mph) speeds, but there's F1s on the back of mine :)

Hmmm, I was thinking the sound was coming from the front but the sound's quite difficult to pinpoint :rubchin:

What the consensus on optimum pressures then? I was thinking of going for 32 or 33 perhaps?

Cheers,

Steve

The pressure was 33 PSI so not excessive. I've dropped to 31 with no noticeable improvement.

It's definitely worse on the nearside. The question is, do I go ahead and get an alignment done or will it make no difference now if the tyre is already feathered?

same as mine and I have f1's all round

my fronts are going to need changing soon so will see whats about

some road surface make the noise worse and some make it go away

I've got the same noise, thing is I have more tread on the rears than the fronts so would probably have to do a full 4 swap and that way out of budget.

I'll get mine up on the ramps and have a proper look at wear. Might also get alignment done - to see if the car's running the adjusted alignment settings that were released for the Octy2.

Steve

Our Octy has run 32 all round since new, and everything seems fine. 2 years and 26k next week.

I've had the alignment done today at a main dealer, cost £75 plus VAT. The rear was out on both sides.

Next job will be to swap the rear tyres to the front and hope that the noise reduces. At least I can be confident that it won't re-occur.

Had exactly this problem on my 6 month old 8k miles Octy 2 vRS.

The noise was like a wheel bearing.

The rears were feathered on the inside edges where the tread blocks were worn unevenly.

Luckily the dealer replaced all 4 tyres free of charge.

Apparantly the Dunlop Sport Maxx directional tyres often do this on the Octy but by the sounds of it, it may be the trait of the car rather than the tyres.

Now have Continental Sport 3's all round.

The tyres are not dangerous in this condition, providing the wear is not excessive and they can be used providing you are willing to put up with the noise or you can switch them side to side and put the worn edge to the outside.

Did they make any suspension alignment changes at the same time the tyres were replaced?

Steve

No.

they said the tyres (Dunlop) were prone to this. It's due for a service next week so am going to get it checked anyway.

Not that I am aware of. They were replaced by Event Tyres.

I have this exact issue. The car is making a terrible drone and the rears are badly feathered but with loads of tread. I have had the car fully aligned by the VAG approved centre near me. I also had the rear camber set to the new recommended skoda settings.

So i know everything is ok but i will have to put up with the tyre noise now as the damage has been done and they are still nearly new. never thought i would be wishing away a set of tyres but i can't wait to get new ones and shut the noise up!

Even if the alignment has been corrected the tyre noise will remain now that the damage is done.

Try getting them taken off the rims and switched side to side so that the wear is on the outside. The noise should go away.
