Fabia 1.4 16V 100hp - engine and comfort unit - incorrectly coded ?

Featured Replies

Greetings all,

MY2000, registration, papers and rear badge indicate it's the 100hp version, originally recovered from an employee who has been fired and kept the car even after leaving the company. So the history of the car is largely unknown - it keeps throwing these error codes at me, even after clearing them.

Engine code unknown, I know it's supposed to be 3 leters - but I can't seem to find it.

Any ideas what might be wrong ? Also, the car sometimes fails to start, mostly after it's been warmed up a bit (eg. going to petrol station 4km, filling up, and trying to start and leave). Jump-starting doesn't do the job, never got around to do it - when the car "cools down" after like 10 minutes, it starts. Once, it idled at 1.5kRPM with white smoke coming out.

Has this got to do something with the wrong coding ?

EDIT: The car has manual gearbox, AC installed, remote central locks, aftermarket radio and I've been told the car may have had all-manual windows from factory and the current front electric windows were installed later.

Have a look under the carpet in the boot, you should find a paper sticker with lots of build codes on it, the engine code will be there, probably AUB.

If you post a full scan of the car including fault codes, then people may be able to help you.

OP quote deleted.

Coding for engine control units should be:

These were valid codes back in 2001.

00061 petrol engine and air con

00071 petrol engine ABS and air con

00005 diesel engine and air con

00006 diesel engine air con and ABS

The electric windows on a 2000 comfort were standard factory specification.

It sounds to me like the engine coolant temperature sensor is playing up. The way to check this is to log all the readings from a cold start to fully warmed up, I've seen them display 80 deg C on one reading and 10 deg C the next, which will play havoc with the fuelling, no engine light on and no temperature sensor related fault codes.

In my experience an incorrectly coded engine control unit (and there were a few when the Fabia came out) will stop the air conditioning from working.

So there it is, the engine seems to be coded completely wrong :D

Will recode it after I get home and log the cold > warm in the morning...by the way, how do I do that ?

Recoded to 00071 with ign on, engine off, cleared the error - it's still there. Haven't tried turning the ignition off completely (removing the key) though.

Surprisingly, the 01044 error on comfort unit has disapered all on its own, don't remember clearing it.

Haven't ever used VAG Com 409 and I don't know whether you have the full or shareware version. This is how I would do it in VCDS, engine 01, measuring blocks 008 (advanced measuring blocks may be available, where you tick what you want to look at), block 004 and field 3 of that block. Start the engine and record the results and look out for anomolies in the readings. A label file for your ECU may be in your VAG Com directory, these can be opened with notepad and detail what's what with the measuring blocks.

This morning my MIL came on, the problem really seems to be the temperature sensor. I've left my engine coded 00071 and the wrong coding error is gone - so I'm all happy :)

Just waiting for the warm weather to try out if the AC is working correctly.

Does the 1.4 fabia use the same coolant temperature sensor as the felicia?

Don't think they cost a lot to replace either way.

Glad it seems to be working now.

Phil

No they don't, the Felicia is a 4 pin sensor with a square plug, the Fabia one is a 2 pin sensor and the plug is rounded at one end. They are similar in price.

Ah right. Thought they were similar design on the early 1.4 engines.

Just ordered one for a peugeot 306 1.9d and that only cost £11 so would have though the skoda ones are less than this.

Phil

  • 2 weeks later...

This is a sort of common problem to AUB Fabias... I also had it. It will get wrong coding again if u disconnect battery for longer time. In my case (back in 2003-2006) I was not able to use AC because of "wrong coding". As soon as I have recoded the 0071 the AC was working perfect :)
