Turbo failed without warning

Featured Replies

Hi all. Regulars will know that I drive an unmodified 05 Vrs with full Skoda history and 35000 on the clock. Last week and without any warning my turbo went. One minute a sedate 55 mph B road cruise and next a loud scream from under the Bonnet and no power. I find this totally unacceptable in a car which is loved. Has a full Skoda ticket and such low miles. Has anyone else had this and have they got goodwill. I am very worried as Skoda really ducked and dived over my previous suspension issues. The car was recovered to a dealer in Devon and I had to miss a days work and train it home. Having to borrow my dads car at the moment.I think my love affair with this car and turbo diesels is over.

Sorry to hear of the news Matt. Shame on a car of that age and mileage.

I do have a std turbo available though, if that helps!

It's at Murrays Newton Abbot Mark. I am going to pursue Skoda to hell and back over this as I haven't got £ 1500 quid in my pocket. As you say no age and miles and the car is standard, unmodded and only visited the dealer in Dec.

How long out of warranty? If you've got the stomach for it, worth pursuing down every avenue you can think of for some goodwill from Skoda UK. Complaints, motoring press, everything.

I'm a trained lawyer so I have the stomach! Just under a year out of warranty.

Are you sure the Turbo has gone?

Mine went wrong a while back as was diagnosed a new Turbo, mine was just a hole in a pipe though.

Good luck

Yep, worth getting everything checked out before assuming the worst - pipework, intercooler etc

Good luck with everything

If you have no warranty then you have no reason to use Murray Skoda for the work. Why not find someone else to do it, or get Wardy's spare KKK and ship it to Murray for them to fit and pay labour only. I know a good garage near Newton Abbot that does all the work on my fabia regardless of how technical. They could recover the car from Murray's and do the work themselves, using Wardy's turbo. :) Would save some serious dosh in the long run. PM me if you want more info. :)

Yep, I was thinking along similar lines, but trying to remain positive that Matt still might get a good warranty outcome :)

Definitely, consider a non-Skoda route if you need to pick the tab up yourself, and that's not me trying to shift a turbo! IMO there's no need to spend £1500 on the remedy.

My turbo went a week after getting mine, gutted!

It was only 2months out of warrenty and mine was remapped, took mine to my local dealer as they only quoted £25 for diagnostic as i wanted to make sure it was definately the turbo

I managed to find a pd150 turbo from a delivery mileage golf and picked it up for £250 and fitted it myself in an afternoon its easy enough to fit and saved about £1400 on what skoda had quoted me.

Definately if theres no way of getting skoda to do any good will work then i wouldnt bother taking it to them again they tried every which way of getting out of goodwill and charging me extra, best to shop around have a good search and find a good turbo and either do it yourself or find a reputable garage and keep your business with them

Mine went at 65k, so no warranty but I took it to my local independent and they did it for less than half the price of Skoda and genuine parts.

The nut had sheared off the turbine shaft....pop!!

I will do it myself if it ever goes again, I didn't realise how 'easy' it is to do....

So pleased that I paid for the aftermarket warranty, might cost £200 for the year but makes me feel better and will be renewing come July

Simon

As long as you're covered for the things you think you should be covered for with an aftermarket warranty,

That's good as the 150 turbo is stronger than the original KK turbo, :)

a pop sounds more like a pipe from the intercooler or somthing. A Turbo blowing is normaly done under acceleration and sounds more like you have just hit the engine with a hammer. When I have seen them blown in the past there has also normaly been a lot of Oil exploded in the engine bay, but that might not be the case all the time.

Before you start to get the **** with Skoda it might be worth having it checked.

Mine decided to go bang on the slip road off of the motorway, asked for more power and just a loud whiring/squealing noise

Exactly what happened with mine Conshine and yes the turbo is knackered, they have confirmed it. The car is a year out of warranty as I say but I am furious as a turbo should not go at 35000 miles on a fully serviced, unmodded and well looked after car. I am going to pursue Skoda.

I may take up your advice Wardy and Deontopia but I want to exhaust all other avenues before I do. I am in Kent and the car is in Devon but I have time as I am useing my Dad's old Merc C280 at the moment as he is retired and doesn't use it much!

I will keep you posted as to the Skoda situation as it may be useful if any of you guys and girls are as unfortunate as I have been.

Yea, I'd persue them and see what you can get, mine went at 65k and well out of any warranty claim as it was 4 years old

If you are mechanically minded, I don't think it's a hard job to do yourself if you have the time and correct parts?

Best of luck with it Matt

Yep, give me a shout if I can help as I doubt the turbo here will go anywhere any sooner. No problem with couriering it down to you, or direct to a garage of your choice....

Steve

ok mate I stand corrected............ to be honest if it is a year out of warrenty I don't realy know how much chance you stand getting skoda to do anything. but let us know if you do as it would be nice to see what happends.

I agree it should go longer..... mine is on origonal turbo with 86K and a de-cat miltek, but i think its on its way out now............. PD150 Time :)

Hi guys Skoda have admitted that a turbo going at just under 4 years and 35000 miles is a premature failure and are going to provide a new turbo and associated parts free of charge which is good news:) i have to cough up the £350 labour bill though:(: I have also got to spend a load of money training it back and forth and have lost money by taking days off. However I really thought that they would offer me nothing so am pleased.

Thanks for your offer though Phil and everybody else for their commiserations:thumbdwn:

nice one mate. looks like skoda are a good bunch after all :)

£350 for the labour ain't to bad considering the original bill. I would expect a similar deal for for out off warranty failures. If you had taken Skoda to the small claims court you would have won the case as well, given that VAG cars are so superior and reliable according to the Sales blurb that is drummed into every customer.

I think that counts as a result :)

Yep, good result overall mate
