Bio Diesel

Featured Replies

Has anyone tried running vRS or PD engine on bio diesel if so I would be interested in opinions/

Straight bio diesel or a mineral / biodiesel blend?

I think VW or VAG do not recommend running the PD engines on Biodiesel. Not entirely sure why.

I have tried running my non-PD 110 TDI on a mixture of Shell Diesel Extra & supermarket brand cooking oil (basicaly, the same principle as biodiesel).

It works a treat - quietens down the engine with no ill-effects. Oh, & it's cheaper too.

The handbook says you can run bio diesel with small performance / MPG loss, it was just to see if anyone had tried it.

TBH, If you want to be eco-friendly & not bothered about the performance/economy loss, then try it.

Otherwise, I wouldn't bother.

Just my opinion. I'll be interested to see if any PD engine drivers have tried it too.

The whole bio-diesel thing - ALL VAG group diesel cars (made in the last 5 years roughly) can run pure bio-diesel which conforms to the standard is it 56501? I forget.. anyhow, my question is - where the heck-fire can you get it from? it's not on any british forecourt. Germany perhaps, but the good old british government love to drag their heels on more eco-friendly fuels.

As for getting Diesel and cooking oil mixed in together - what is the proportions? If I fill up my TDI with Diesel from my local Morrissons how much cooking oil do i mix into a 45litre tank?

Regards,

try here

Thanks for that! :) - didn't think there were any outlets at all - that's really good news. Now all we need are some outlets in Oxfordshire and Greater Manchester.

I notice some Tesco's are selling it - if other supermarkets take it up then that'll be even better.

Regards,

Its fairly pointless , as the stuff you can get in the UK is only 5% bio and 95% normal diesel , costs the same as normal stuff , and is only available in a limited number of garages.

If you are looking to save money then you'd be better off finding a local takeaway that will sell you used cooking oil and filtering it yourself.

If you make your own 'biodiesel' out of waste cooking oil, that fuel is subject to excise duty if you use it in a vehicle. All 'legal' fuels for diesel vehicles - and maybe for petrol vehicles too - contain chemical markers which enable HM Customs and Excise to determine if they is duty-paid. (Culled from a quick read of HM Customs and Excise site).

Isn't Tesco's fuel a biodiesel blend too? I personaly get best MPG results on Shell Diesel Extra so I'll stick to that.

My local Tesco (Andover) sells Global Diesel which is a blend of 5% biodiesel with normal diesel. I use it regularly and do see several mpg more out of a whole tank and I think the car runs much smoother on it. :) Also, I get no smoke at all out the back of my car, even with a tuning box attached! :D

tesco do a 5% bio desiel and it sucks! Costs more and you get a noticable lower economy and performance! I tried one tank and was totally dismayed :(

Back on the full fat stuff now ;)

Check fuel prices in your area using the petrol watch email service on the aa website, really good! I think they call it petrol busters.

Doesn't seem worth the trouble.

Sorry to drag this one up again, but i have filled using a tank of this and i very noticably have seen a decrease in performance, not huge, but eneough to notice...

Bizarre - I've just filled up with normal diesel and noticed a decrease in performance! ;) Also running a bit more "diesely" than with the Global diesel. Will put a few more tank fulls through though to see how it goes - may just be psychological! :D

I get worse economy with the Biodiesel blend fromTesco than Shell's diesel extra, particularly at start up.

You know your probably right there :) i shall experiment over time

Here's the results of an experiment I did last weekend. At low revs, bio produced a little less power than mineral diesel; at high revs bio produces more torque than mineral. Otherwise they turned out the same, and not much in it anyway.

Since then the car has been as quick, much quieter and seems to be more economical as well using a 5% mix of biodiesel and my normal diesel. The problem with buying pre-blended biodiesel is you don't know what 95% mineral diesel was used.

I don't think you should pass judgement on a bio blend until you've had at least 2 consecutive tankfuls through the system.

Hope this helps,
