Sratched windows

I noticed today when cleaning my car that the near side front window has been scratched in numerous places. This has been caused by winding down the window!!! has anyone had this happen to them before and why is it happening???

Because bits of grit get trapped between the rubber and the glass, and scratch the window when it goes up or down.

Doesnt that defeat the object of the rubber being there to stop that from happening?

How much does it cost to replace a window? And if i get it replaced will it be to the same standard of low level tint as the drivers window?

How scratched is it? Replacement seems a bit extreme.

What about machine polishing by someone who knows what they're doing?

There are lots of small sratches ranging in length near the top of the window. Its not that bad but it does look awful.

I have not considered polishing and was not aware that it could be done on windows.

I have tried to take a photo to show you but you cannot see the scratches, only the inside of the car.

The rubber is there to also stop water and other items dropping into the door and flooding the electrics.

If it was tight enough to stop very small pieces of grit, then you would never get the window down.

Bit like when they tell you never to operate the wipers on a dry windscreen for the same reason, as the small pieces of grit etc will scratch the screen.

I have got the same thing on my Furby's drivers side window. I have tried AG Glass polish but it looks a quite deep scratch, you can feel it with your nail. I wonder if the glue solution stuff used for windscreen repairs would cure it. It's either a new window or I'll just have to live with it.

Try taking the photograph through a polarising filter - if you haven't got one, try it by holding a pair of 'polaroid' sunglasses in front of the lens.

And I forgot to add - put a Post-It note on the glass near the scratches to give the camera something to focus on, it's probably focussing through the glass and not on the glass. If you can manually focus, do that instead.

Don't try polishing tempered glass with a machine. It won't work.

Wonder what the part # for new window brushes is and how much they cost & how difficult to fit?

You can polish glass with a machine. I no theres a kit available from america thats meant to be A1 for it. Lake country or something like that. Dont know about anything available hear, could ask on detailingworld though and you will probably get a good answer.

I've got a kit for polishing glass (as its my job!)

Never used it on my car yet but it'll take light scratches out of any smooth glass.

If your north af the border give me a shout alternativley i'll be in gateshead late april
