Hello - Lost Key!

Featured Replies

Just wanted to check here for info first before going to a skoda dealership.

My son has the other key for my car - skoda fabia 2002 model - and has just dropped it down a grating. He hasn't been able to get it back and I was just wondering if it is possible to buy a key (doesn't necessarily have to control the central locking) that will open the doors, start the car up, etc. and won't cost the money that I have been quoted so far - anything from £65 + vat.

Thanks

Tracey:confused:

Where are you based? It is possible to buy a new key from ebay. get it cut by a locksmith, and then get it coded by someone who has the right tools. I believe a few people on here could do that for you :)

Thanks for the response and the info.

I live in Belfast. I spotted one e-bay but they say something about a transponder so I'm assuming that's the wee button that opens the central locking? Would I get something like that - has the same number on it that mine's has - HELLA 434 MHZ, then get it cut (?) and the button programmed (at Skoda?).

As you can tell I know absolutely nothing about cars:confused:

There are three important parts of the key.. the blade, the transponder (this is a tiny chip inside the key that communicates with the immobiliser) and the remote for the central locking (that's the part with the buttons).

You need to find one with the same type of transponder as yours (someone else with a Fabia may be able to help here) and also one that works on the same remote central locking frequency as yours (that's the 434Mhz bit that you've already correctly identified ).

Hopefully someone who knows a little more about Fabias can help with which kinds of transponder you need/part number.

Then you can either have it done by a dealer, or by someone else with the correct equipment.

Hello and welcome to Briskoda

Hello again everyone and thanks for your welcomes and advice.

Just wanted to update you all on the lost key saga. I was actually able to recover - with the help of my dad and a bucket - the keys from the grating. They had fallen to the bottom of the drain - about 3 ft deep full of stagnant water and leaves. I wasn't too sure if they were going to work after being underwater for most of the day but am amazed to say they did.

Thanks again, Tracey
