Powder coat?????

Featured Replies

I am looking for a powder coating company for a set of wheels and have been emailing a few companies,i had this reply from one

we do powder coat however not the colour.we do it slightly different.

first we chemically strip the wheel to remove all the old paint.

prep the wheel and then powder prime the wheel ,wet spray the colour and finish the wheel

in a high temp gloss lacquer.

Is this method better than the usual powder coating method?

 powder coating is wet sprayed anyway??

i assume they mean they use paint which is ok i guess, but i very much doubt it is anywhere near as durable as powder

Yeah thats what i was thinking

the only thing i would say about powder is that is very very difficult to get it back off again if you ever need to re-do one, when you shot blast it, it just forms gooey lumps

Thats a good point

The place that emailed me wants £45 a wheel so its not a bad price for a full refurb

but i dont understand what they are saying about the colour(i wanted anthracite)

Probably best if i speak to them

saying that they wont say

"yeah 2 months down the road and the wheels will be scratched to hell because the paint doesnt stay on too well"

:D

anthracite is a metalic colour isn't it? you can only do solid colours with powder afaik, i'll ask my mate jimbo and see what he says (he runs a powder coating firm:D)

look up RAL colours on google

For what it's worth, I'd strongly recommend Rugby Powder Coating who are in, er, Rugby - they're doing a hardtail MTB frame for me as we speak.

Triple S powder coating are the god's of such things ..... family company and been in the business for years, they do all my powdercoating and every job without exception has been perfect

I had my wheels refurb'd and sprayed anthracite just before the bad snow and I have had no problems.

I have also done a 600 mile round trip to Liverpool through blizzard conditions and got done by a gritter and the wheels are still perfect.

The paint finish is a lot more durable than you think

but why get them powder coated and then sprayed? would it not be more simple for a straight blast and spray onto the there and not doing the powder coat?

Oh, and afaik the powder in powder coat is applied dry.

It has a positive charge applied by the gun and is attracted to the wheel which is grounded.

that's my understanding of it to

It's a dry powder which when cooked in the oven then melts, (well kind of melts) into a high gloss finish.

I don't see why you can't get the colour you want you just need to find the powder coater that will do it.

If you spray on top of the powder then what's the powder doing, it's just a durable layer underneath like a primer. Seems an expensive way of doing things and more processes for something to go wrong.

Anthracite Grey is RAL 7016 btw
