My mystery clonk

Featured Replies

Okay I thought i'd got this sorted but apparently not. When the cars cold and I head over the speed bumps at work I often get a clonk from the front from either side, sometimes left sometimes right.

I've taken it to 2 garages so far and niether have found anything. It handles well (had the ross seal of approval), 99% of the time no clunks under spirited cornering (occassionally happens when very cold on lumpy corners). What the hell can it be considering i've had the following done in the last few months:

  • New ARB (now with powerflex bushes)
  • New drop links
  • Cupra rear wishbone bushes
  • Powerflex front wishbone bushes
  • New gearbox side & dogbone mounts

top mounts

expensive? :(

I no the sound you mean. I sometimes get it when theres a car parked at the turning point in my street and i have to go lock to lock  Wouldnt mind fixing it! Ive also changed cupra bushes up front, droplinks etc. Not to cure this clunk, just because i wanted to, but i still hear this clunk.

Could be a top mount and bearing issue, about the only thing left unless you have a damper on the way out.

I know Ali didn't hear anything untoward on road test and we checked everything over visually.

Had you planned at any point on uprating the suspension?

Its a strange one, i had a clunking and had slight movement in one of my coilover shocks, flexing where the piston goes into insert so i replaced the insert on the coilover, and have replaced one part of the top mount on one side, because my front strut brace chewed one of the threads. Top mounts only other thing it could be i think. Might give it a go, im sure it was like £24 from stealers? Number seems to ring a bell.

Tempted to uprate, but too costly atm :( and I know what a slippery slope it can become!

I didn't hear it at all on the way down to you or the way back... or over the rest of the weekend. As soon as I hit the first of about 15 speed bumps leaving work after it had been standing all day it clonked and then over 50% of the rest.

Its a loud single clonk, seems to take it in turns from each side sometimes both. Was told the drop links were looking a bit sorry so had it stuck in my head that it was them oh well

They were pretty tired when i changed them.

The top mounts themselves arent to expensive, i'd change the bearings also.

Looks like I may be making some calls... barclays will be loving me

Something you may be willing to take care of? :D

Try your exhaust hangers, I had exactly the same symptoms as you on my Octavia, so worth a shot?

could just be the front springs moving slightly on their seats

i've replaced all the items you have and more (done the top mounts/bearings too) and mine still clonks occasionally, i just say "whatever" to myself now

I had clunking on full lock, but when i changed to eibachs. I noticed the cups in the top mounts had worn through the coating on the coil.

Eibachs in and no clunking now.

It does sound like something is clunking in/out of place. Maybe I am just worrying too much :( Is a really loud off putting sound sometimes though, sounds like some things about to snap

I don't get it on full lock, I have to do a 3 point turn to park at my house and I never hear it then.... only over speed bumps.

Just got into work and I didn't hear it at all again

Mine does a weird clonk when i'm on full lock either direction, but a little louder on left hand lock. Its only started doing it since i fitted the bilstein kit, checked my ARB, and my droplinks, they are fine. Could it be the spring moving, or could it be the top mounts?

the Eibach lowering spring kit comes with alloy spacers , these spacers are supposed to be fitted to the steering rack to restrict the available lock

what happens when they are not fitted, is there could be a slight touch situation between the steering arm and the front ARB when on full lock/loaded up suspension

the same thing will apply to any lowering springs when fitted

Useful information to have!

Wish it was helpful to me as well though :(

Sorry to drag this thread back up, but I hadn't heard any clonking for 1-2 weeks now until today...

talk about a clonk fest! One perfectly straight road which was fairly unbumpy, must of heard clonks from each side 4-5 times!? Then throughout the day I heard it randomly normally going straight or very light cornering.

I went over 5 speed bumps, no noise. Then on a straight road 5 minutes later doing about 20 i heard it a couple of times again.

Could this still be the strut top mounts? I'm so fed up of this now. I called 3 local garages after my last post and 2 didn't get back to me even after follow up calls. :(

I'm in the same boat at the minute mate.

Had my coilovers fitted then a week later had cupra console bushes and powerflex fitted.

Now I've had a slight clonk from the passenger side over bumps, from what sounds like the top mount, since the coilovers were installed.

However they were brand new ones that went in and I've checked they are all tight and they are.

2 weeks after that work was done I started to get a knocking noise when turning right and going straight ahead below 20mph.

I've changed the droplinks for brand new ones, and my ARB stops are not damaged, but I'm going to replace the bushes to see if that improves things

I can't see it being top mountings, could be wrong but there just isnt that much to them.

I would be difficult to find by the sounds of it on a ramp, on a forum damn impossible.

Need another good look at it and maybe get some parts into stock just in case.

At least its not just mine then!

I'll need a service in the next 2 months maybe less (and possibly rear brakes still if I don't man up and do it myself) so if you'd be okay with giving it a good looking at that'd be cool

aslong as it doesn't fall apart before then  :(

i fitted some spax springs to a mates fiesta about 2 year ago, using the original shocks. they started to do this problem and i traced it to the springs a) rubbing on the spring cup and B) moving slightly.

i made some rubber insulators, to place between the spring and cup, out of an old inner tube....problem solved!!

Your not alone! I have had almost all what you have had done, minus the gearbox & dogbone and my knocking noises have returned in the last two weeks...... :thumbdwn:

It's so bloody annoying! mine comes mainly from the drivers side, but i think i may have heard it a couple of times recently from the passenger side too. Usually happens on slightly bumpy roads when i have a very small amount of right lock on going round a right hand bend, but also does it over bigger bumps when going in a straight line. To my ears the knocking appears to be getting worse over time. It's messing with my mind........

I'm going to wait until my service is due now, i'll take a run up to unit18 when it's due and see if we can sort the knocking once and for all. keep us posted if you happen to find the answer, likewise, i'll do the same.

That sounds like it could be the same mate. you on standard springs too just out of interest?

tbh thinking about it, I hadn't heard these noises much at all before I had my ARB replaced in december. Could just be coincidence though especially as Ross had his hands over it and didn't see anything amiss

Sometimes it also sounds like its coming from the rear... could be how the sound travels through the cabin though. Varies from a soft clonk to *HOLY MOTHER OF PEARL* :(

if you find out the cause of yours noises please let me know!

Yes standard springs and shocks...... Mine was doing it before i had the new arb and powerflex arb bushes fitted, which along with powerflex front bushes and cupra rears were fitted less than a month ago. After it was done, all was well for a little over a week or so, but it's back now as bad as it was before.

Not sure about what your experiencing with it sounding like it's coming from the back...... Mine definitely always sounds like the front right suspension/strut area, but i do think i may have a couple of occasions it's sounded as though it has done it on the passenger side too, but only a couple of times..... i will be sure to let you know if i find anything out....

Little update.... Managed to get under the car today and have a glancing look to see if there were any obvious marks of where things might be knocking off each other.. no luck but then i am as mechanically minded as a pickle. True to form though as soon as i sat back in the drivers seat it clonked, and again as I pulled back up the driveway.

Last 2 days with all the rain its developed a lovely crunching/scraping noise mainly from the left hand side going over speed bumps to accompany the clonks too lol Has been okay today as its dried out.

C'est la vie :worried:
