Outlook Questions

Featured Replies

Hi,

One for the techies.

I've set up my Googlemail account on Outlook 2007, and when reading/deleting emails through Outlook, the messages will still appear as unread when logging in via Google's homepage. Is there a way that I can set it up to synchronise, as it's just seems a bit pointless with the current set-up.

Also, when Outlook is performing its automatic send/receive, as well as every couple of minutes or so, it renders the current window inactive for a few seconds. Not really a big issue, but annoying when you're in the middle of typing. Any obvious cures?

TIA.

Is it leaving the original messages on the server?

Yes, much better way of saying it than my attempt!

Why not use IMAP?

Syncs your mail and google, plus lets you see the spam folder from Outlook ;)

Don't use outlook?

Seriously, the only good time to use Outlook is if you use Exchange server. It's not the best POP/IMAP/SMTP Client.

Given up on outlook/outlook express - since I started using Win7 ,found that WINDOWS LIVE MAIL is way to go . Great on XP , GOOD ON WIN 7. Setting it up - childs play - asks you for username and password - then sets it all up.Try it - you won't be dissapointed .

There are help pages on the Googlemail page that explain how its done. I was looking at them yesterday.

As we both you Googlemail, my Inbox is getting quite full, Can you sort out the mail into new Folders, if so how? I have seen in my mates Hotmail account, he can.

The simple answer is use IMAP and not POP. The difference in a nutshell is the messages are always stored on the server (in this case googlemail). Each message has a 'state' attached to it, be it unread, read, forwarded etc. When you change that state in outlook by opening the mail for example, the server is instantly updated, so your outlook will match googles web mail and vice-versa.

It also means there is no 'send & recieve' its real time.

Cheers all, I've changed it to IMAP and all seems to be well (apart from the window issue, but I'll find a way for that).

I've used Windows Live Mail before and it is good, but I like the calender feature on Outlook

Or use thunderbird, and there are plenty of Calender add ons.

Thunderbird is an excellent mail client. It does things properly, for a start.

Yep another approval for Thunderbird! I have used it on various machines through out the years and its a really nice program to use.
