Cornering lamps

To improve visibility during night driving, manufacturers have started fitting cornering lights.

Cornering lights are white colored lights usually fitted into the bumper bar and are designed to provide side light when the vehicle is turning corners.

The additional lighting provided by cornering lights helps the driver to see the curb and any obstacles that may not be illuminated by the headlights.

Cornering lights turn on only when the headlights and turn signal switches are on, so they only come on when the vehicle is turning the corner, and turn off automatically when the turn signal turns off.

[/url]Cornering lamps have traditionally been prohibited under international ECE Regulations, though provisions have recently been made to allow them as long as they are only operable when the vehicle is travelling at less than 40 (about 25 mph),

this is differnet to thow the superb functions as you do not need the turn signals (indicators) on

There are two different modes on the Superb according to the brochure

Dynamic cornering lights

Which operate from 6mph onwards and and are dependant on the speed of the car and angle of the wheel

Static Cornering lights

These are deactivated above 24mph and come on with the indicator , they also fade in and out

Pages 56 57 in the owners manual cover the details of the AHL and Cornering lights.

problem is that i have not driven my car enough to work all this out as it constantly at the bloody garage being fixed !!!!

:thumbup::)

its only a car - not worth getting stressed about. no-one got hurt !!

SMStext is talking cobblers, ignore what he suggests. If he ever did actually go down his local cop shop and demand that they pin his docs on the wall, he'd have got locked up under the ways and means act.

grow up, its exactly what i did and i can give you the station it was done at back in 1995 and no i didnt get locked up the desk sergent was actually very interested to know why the same copper had stopped me that many times.

and i will add that im guessing irvtheswerv is a copper and in his station they all follow the code of conduct and nothing is stolen and life is so perfect...

Low level driving/fog lights - I have been stopped by the police at night for having one fog light out of action. This occurred at night, in an urban area, at low speed, where by the cars design, the low level fog lights switch on and off, on sharpish corners to provide extra illumination at kerb level - one light at a time depending upon turn direction. Police suggest that front fog lights should be in pairs and the lights as fitted could be illegal. They didn't believe the light arrangement was by design, and I couldn't be bothered to get out the handbook to prove it. Otherwise it was just a good excuse to stop someone late at night. Any views?

I would suggest that a) It must have been a VERY quiet night for the local plod and B) instead of drinking tea back at the local nick reading Heat magazine, they dig out a couple of owners' manuals for cars (they are even available on line now) and read the damn things.

That way they might become a little familiar with the lastest advances in vehicle lighting. Just wait for the new vehicles coming with daylight running lights. Even the new octys have them fitted now, incorporated within the front fogs. We'll all be in court!

Skoda UK have given me a clear legal opinion. They say the vehicle (including lights!) is fully type approved for UK. The lights in question have two functions. They are designated 'driving' lights when used to supplement the main lighting in urban areas and turn on/of singly to illuminate the nearside kerb areas at low speeds. They are also designated 'fog' lights when activated as such by the driver, and in that case operate only as a pair.

I hope that clears it up. More information for Mr Plod to learn.

Does this mean they're illegal, full-stop?

I know someone who has the 09 ibiza sc he had his fog lights on and got asked to turn them off as he was parked.

So he turned them off and then the policeman came back and said one is still on.

And he was amazed with the technology!

Caravan_man's post #35 has the correct interpretation.

The Road Traffic Lighting Regs and with Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA), reveal that no offences are involved. When the light illuminates to provide extra illumination when cornering, then it becomes an additional driving light and not a front fog light. This additional lamp in those conditions does not need to be one of a matching pair.

When the lights are turned on for use as fog lights, then they would need to be a matching pair.

VOSA would not put any prohibitions on any such vehicle.
