Will a different air filter affect my remap?

Featured Replies

Hi All,

Might be a daft question, but will replacing the oem air filter with a pipercross filter affect my remap? If so what will be the side effects please? I'm hoping it won't affect it and therefore won't involve having another map!

Thanks in advance.

I dont think it will really have any effect at all, however if you was to get it mapped again you may see some extremely slight gains with it remapped with your new filter.

i would think you'l be fine replacing just the panel filter!

with the benefit of hindsight , you should of had your aftermarket filter fitted when you had it remapped

No matter what filter you had or have in the diference will be minimal if at all.

Why is that then? And what effect might it have? Cheers.

with a performance a/f in they might map your car a little differently due to the benefit of a better filter, i would think the difference would be nothing though

You need to have the remap done every time you change the air filter,to take into account the individual characteristics of the new air filter. That's what the bloke trying to sell me a remap said.

Someone just wanted to make some money out of you then! for optimal gains yeah but £300+ for the sake of maybe 0.5bhp, really wouldnt bother myself

When I did a Rolling Road session at Motorscope a few weekends ago, I bought a K&N panel filter and did a few runs before and after. Mine is bog standard, no re-map.

Before: 142.1 BHP, 248.2 lbf

After : 143.3 BHP, 249.9 lbf

So a little gain had. I have been told the after figures may improve when the ECU adapts to the higher air flow due to the new filter. A remap after fitting the filter will use these new air flow figures to start with. Another common upgrade to filters is to fit the inlet pipe from a Seat Ibiza Cupra PD160.

Thanks to everyone for your replies, I think I'll give the new one a go when it arrives and see how I go. I was just a little concerned it may prove detrimental to the way the car runs. Fingers crossed it won't be! Cheers all

Out of interest on rolling roads, what does it cost then?

Should I change my filter then? it's been in there nearly 40,000 miles (I suppose as the skode service schedule), does it really get that clogged?

An aftermarket filter tends to be slightly higher airflow, but needs cleaning a fair bit more.

If you were to replace the OEM paper one every 10k instead of the (stupid/insane/fill in..) 40k that is supposed to be the change interval, it wont be too bad.

I found the paper filter distinctly rubbish after 20k and the car smoked a fair bit (stock), and I replaced the filter with a green cotton one. They are not perfect fit but work well enough.

An OEM paper filter replaced every 10k should work a treat, and is fairly easy as well :)

It was approx £35, but at a discount because done during a group session with SeatCoupra.net. I think it's normally £45 at Motorscope in Northallerton, North Yorkshire. The Filter and RR was just over £70.

Yes the standard filter does get clogged, I wound change it. An aftermarket panel filter will cost between £30-£50, depending on which one you buy, Pipercross, Green, K&N, etc. and where. You do not replace them, but you clean them every 10-20K miles.
