vRS good points/bad points

Featured Replies

Hi,

I am currently looking for a new estate and have the Octy vRS on my shortlist. What are the good / bad points / what do I need to look out for?

Cheers

Rich

I'd struggle to think of something seriously wrong with the vRS.

Fuel consumption is good considering the engine.

It's very easy to drive despite being 200hp

Lots of room and the build quality and materials quality is good for the money

Minor quibbles

You could find the ride a bit harsh

There is no steering mounted stereo controls (tbh this would be the thing that annoys me most about the car)

Water drips off the tailgate into the boot if it's raining (hatch, sorry)

If you have badge issues you'll never get over the fact it's a Skoda.

It's a fairly safe bet as a car really.

I have the hatch but doesnt really matter.

In comparison to equivelent cars it is by far the best value for money without doubt.

The only qualms I have is like Aspman says when the boot lid is wet it can drip in to the boot when opened(only small amount though.)

And the tyres supplied as standard were not up to the challenge. Put on there for life rather than outright grip. however mine is slightly tuned and gets driven hard onand off track (they lasted over 20000 miles though)

cant really think of anything else.

steareo is good,

good on fuel(driven normally)

always gets great reactions from people when they get in it for the first time

Also not forgetting that they will be releasing the facelifted one in the near future...so might be worth holding out that little longer to see what that is like.

Also I was looking at the VRS then opted for the L&K for the extra toys.

I am interested in the facelifted vRS so I hope they release it sometime soon. I am doubting it will be this year though because Skoda haven't even released any official pictures yet :rotz:

Middle of this year I believe...

What extra toys does the L&K have ? What engines does it come with?

You want an L&K with the Columbus navigation and the 1.8TSI engine, job done

The L&K comes with more or less everything standard, the navigation is the only noteworthy option I think.

Bad points.... none that I can really think of, put it this way you could do a ot worse and spend a lot more !!!

Audi A4 Avant type space for a car that's based on the Golf MkV platform is pretty impressive and it still goes like stink and takes corners well.

If your looking 2nd hand then try and get a petrol TFSI, blinding engine, best colour is silver (a real sleeper)

Mostly agree with the other responders regarding the vRS estate but not really on the harsh ride, not as firm as some other perfomance estates. One area that is a pain is the lack of self leveling rear suspension.

It would be interesting to know your shortlist. I had shortlisted the vRS with the Jaguar X type estate (much less space, to pricy and slower!) Volvo V50 (same as Jag and chassis made from blamange) BMW 3 series (do I need to comment?)

The shortlist of estates so far..

Focus - can't find a decent spec in petrol

Mondeo - titanium x sport 2.5 - too big.

jag Xtype - haven't seen one in the flesh yet

V50 - looks ok but doesn't handle.

3 series - looked smaller than the focus also decent ones are too expensive

5 series - decent ones are too expensive

audi A4 - too expensive..

Octavia Estate - not specifically the vRS but theymight slip into my price bracket - might as well have a bit of fun...

Apart from that still looking around.

Bad points. If you are looking at a petrol vRS and drive it anywhere near its potential then fuel consumption is poor, oil consumption can be high and needs to be monitored often. It is, to my mind a bit of a barge for chucking about especially on standard suspension.

i only commute 3 miles each way each day, so diesel would not be a good idea. I rarely make long journeys so i can stand the worse fuel consumption..

6 mile commute, not even enough time for engine to warm up!

If your gonna murder an engine, get something french - Citreon / Pug is my pref

just walk or get the bike out.not gonna do the car any good driving that distance twice a day.

I love my petrol vRS. The only things I'd like to change would be to reduce the road roar from coarse aggregate bitumen (the surface of choice on many roads here in Oz), and also possibly fit Koni FSD shocks to take the edge off the impact on sharp road imperfections (another common Oz road "feature").

Octavia Vrs TDI CR DSG

:) Good fun to drive

:) Nothing close to its value for money

:) Quiet except for some tyre noise from 18" wheels & 40% tyres

:) 51.9 mpg on run, 47 mpg mixed, 42 mpg on fast runs (car still tight only 600 miles)

:) Easy to drive, good torque and super fast & smooth gearbox

:) Lots of space & good quality interior

 Poor sounding stereo, harsh treble, improved if 3.3uf capacicitors fitted to tweeters

 Slight water enters boot if you forget to open hatch slowly

 DSG makes manual gearbox cars feel inadequate

Was thinking of a manual gearbox until I test drove the DSG

Nice to drive.Excellent econamy.Brilliant engine and dsg g/box.Good handling.Looks the dogs bo##ocks.

Interior rattles that will drive you insane.vibrating h/lights[xenon].

Dealers don't want to know if owt goes wrong.

If you find a good dealer buy one.

42mpg on fast runs? You must really cain it!

I'd disagree about DSG. I think manual gearbox cars make DSG feel inadequate. It's personal preference but I find DSG totally uninvolving as it removes part of the driving experience for me.

get a bicycle :D
