HELP mum put petrol in the vRS

Hi Guys, my mum just put petrol in her vRS.. she put 8 litres in, stoppped, asked the guys at BP and then filled up with diesel, she didnt ring me so couldnt tell her not to start it!!

Anyway she got home fine (3 miles) but now the car wont start!!

Any ideas of costs?? Probs expensive, but hopefully not into thousands!

Hmmm, well in theory it would have been roughly 40 litres diesel and 8 petrol.... That's quite a bit to try and get through the engine so I would opt for a full drain, refill with diesel & renew the fuel filter. After that, the engine should eventually start again. :) Thankfully the "petrol in a diesel" thing is not as bad as getting it the other way round.

Thanks mate, just been googleing (is that a word) and been seeing prices for thousands!!

I shouted at my mum and feel a bit s*** now as she has been sat sobbing all night!!

Any idea if it needs new fuel pumps etc?

Unless you drive a common rail diesel, then you are royally shafted.

:eek: care to divulge more how this happens? Makes me glad I have a PD for that reason but then I have OCD when it comes to refuelling and always double check.

I doubt any fuel pump / injector units will need replacing on the fabia. :)

Are you still in Skoda Assist / breakdown cover period? If so, get them to tow the car to the nearest place they have on file. That would be best. Should not be too bad in the end. :)

Cheers Mate, yes I got skoda assistance, they plan on taking it to MSB Skoda in Darlington, but worried they will sting me with big bill, on the plus side however, it needs a service too so can get both done together:rofl: lol

DO NOT TAKE IT TO SKODA. They will throw away your warranty.

Someone I know did this with their vRS (ahem!) and he had it drained by Madgetts recovery near Ely. They do over 100 cars per week:eek: and it usually takes no more than 30 minutes. They charged 'my friend' £225 including recovery from Thetford to Ely (30 miles), disposal of the petrol and a full tank of diesel to replace it.

60,000 miles on and 'my friend' has had no problems with it at all.

Most recovery services offer this.

The TDI is a PD and not common rail is that correct?

If so, am I am gonna be royally shafted or not?

Correct, you should be fine.

I was higlighting that not all engines are as forgiving. On the CR engines the diesel lubricates the high pressure fuel pump. When petrol is flushed through it it cleans the diesel off and the pump runs dry. This then sends metal fragments around the whole fuel system destroying it as it goes.

Yeah I did mate, she wrote her golf off and I paid the difference between the value of the golf and the vRS:thumbup:

Just had call from the recovery guy and my mum, they have picked the car up and taken it to the recovery garage, been quoted £215 to fix it, hopefully nothing else has broken with me sat trying to start it.

diesel car can almost self-flush itself back through again once drained. I believe diesel in a petrol needs more parts renewing, being bled through, and maybe more. Thankfully my knowledge is limited due to having never experienced the issues of getting it wrong each way. :)

isn't it near impossible now though to put diesel in a petrol due to the bigger fuel nozzles at the pump so the nozzle just wont go in?

i was a bit dead one morning with my civic and spent ages at a pump thinking WTFFF then realising i was trying to put diesel in LMAO

Got a call from the garage expecting bad news, all sorted apparently!

Going up to collect it shortly when the girlfriend comes over,

Then into work only 3hours late lol

Lets hope my mum whos using my A3 doesnt decide to fill it up today!!:rofl:

From experience... :o

On an Old Triumph Dolomite....

Car pinks/detonates like mad, producing huge plumes of white/gray smoke behind it from the part burnt diesel. Had the ignition retarded by adjusting the points and had to use a combination of the throttle pedal and the choke to accelerate even slightly. Within 2 weeks it wasn't running quite right, the plugs were completely sooted up. After plugs were replaced it worked fine.

I shudder to think what might happen to a modern high compression injection engine or worse, a petrol turbo engine in similar circumstances.

:orb_no_no Shame on you.......this can happen to anyone - even you. I would say you owe her a lot than a bunch of flowers!

I think this petrol in diesel thing is vastly overhyped.

Yes, CR is more prone to disaster - but VW have only just introduced CR - CR is the realm of Vauxhall, Ford etc. They are a disaster with or without petrol.

PD is pretty robust.

I would have done this......

Siphoned (if thats possible nowadays?) sufficient from the tank, and filled up with fresh diesel to make it less than 5% petrol.

Lobbed in quad dose of millers.

Drained fuel filter,refilled and refit.

Restart - and drive gently until you can get another half tank or more back in.

I would put the drained fuel back into the tank but make sure not to exceed about 2%, and keep using the millers (at normal dose)

Too many £££ made out of fear.
