Average windscreen wiper life?

Featured Replies

Just wondering how long a set of wipers should last....?

Mine have begun to leave massive amounts/streaks of water all over the screen when I wipe and its beginning to annoy me. I thought it might be the ombrello first but its got worst as the ombrello has detiorated, so I think its time for new blades on the front, and back, while I'm at it.

One question are the ones on ebay claiming to be "as good as bosch" any good - they're cheap, but are they rubbish? How much will 3 blades cost me at a dealer or could I get them from a motor factors, for the same product?

Thanks

Mine were replaced after at least 15K miles. And it was about time too ;)

Halfords sell Bosch I think, although I've yet to replace mine. Probably should soon as they're a bit noisy and the rear one judders over the rear screen!!! :)

Thanks - will check my local motor factors first I think - I've done over 20K since getting mine, and I wonder how long they'd been in there before then. Time for a change. You know I NEVER changed the wipers in my old car - and that was 50K miles....

Jason my dealer sold me my blades as they went that expensive at

I paid about

i paid less than

I replaced my front ones at the weekend, from a dealer they were about

Also, do these other ones have wear indicators on as the dealer supplied ones do?

Whereabouts are the wear indicators on the wipers? Never seen them in the past, but sounds like a very good idea ;)

Chris

Seen the wear indicators on blades in picture in the past but haven't actually seen any in rear life. IIRC the wear indicator is simply UV operated.

Obviously a dealer will always charge more but the Bosch ones from wherever are not the genuine article. The genuine Skoda fit Octavia wiper on the passenger side is curved, the Bosch replacement is not. This was pointed out to me by someone who works for a main dealer. He looked at my car and the first thing he said (after 'My god that's the most beautiful car I've ever seen. I'll bet it's quick too :D ) was 'Non standard wipers'.

Mine did that from new! It's 3 months old and the wipers need replacing

Once a year is not unreasonable especially if it's been a harsh winter with a lot of salt on the roads. Frost knackers them quick too.

Mine are still going strong after 45,000 miles - which I do find surprising, especially as my gf is on her third set on her Golf after 30,000 miles - and it's exactly the same age as mine - 17 months.

I did 80K in my Felicia and never needed to change the wipers!

Hmmm - I may try and a bit of glass cutter & polish on the screen/s first - could be simply a build up of grease that's not removed by a cold water wash. :D

Yep - think I'll try this too as I'll need to do it before applying the Ombrello anyway ;)

Is their condition examined as part of the NI MOT test, William?

As Flyingscot says, it's basically a round sticker (about 1cm across) that is black and on the top side of the wiper (so that it's visible from the driving seat) and will eventually go bright yellow in UV light when it's time to replace them.

Also, they are definetely curved as I put the passenger one on the wrong way round initially and the blade curved over the edge of the screen on both ends.

Andy

Hummm. Yellow dots - wondering what they were for. :D

Jason, Halfrauds do quite a good Traffic Film Remover, which often helps get the screen really clean and wipe the usual road gunk and film off. Worn Ombrello will probably make it worse too. Time for a good clean and re-apply. GB time again???? ;):D
