My insurance story for the day...

Before reading this consider that I am 28, male, drive an 07 Octavia vRS worth about £12k, live in Merseyside, park the car on the street at night, do about 25k miles per year, have 6 years NCB and insure for business use as well as SDP and commuting.

Renewal quote from DirectLine was £748.20. A morning spent on t'internet and telephone sees me with lowest quote of £649.01 from Privilege. Excess is lower than Direct Line, and quote includes guaranteed hire car and NCD protection.

Ring Direct Line and tell them about this. They go away and a few minutes later they call back offering same price as Privilege, lower excess, hire car plus scheme (hire car of similar size and standard to mine if needed) plus additional 10% "loyalty bonus" for giving them the chance to price match.

Does make you think though - so many people just accept the quote at renewal time, and yet they can reduce by this kind of amount and still make a profit, if only you are prepared to push a little bit...
