It started with a fuse...

Featured Replies

A couple of months ago I noticed that the dashboard indicator and interior light were not coming on when I opened the driver's door. All other doors worked fine. It didn't bother me, but I didn't realise that it could have been the harbinger of doom.

Then recently after the car had been standing for a fortnight at an airport carpark we found that door open light came on mid journey. Also, at the same time, we lost electric windows, roof and remote central locking.

I thought it was jsut a fuse and after checking noted that fuse 14 was blown (10a). Changed it, the dash light went out, everything worked and I went on my merry way.

Unfortunately, the windows, roof and remote locking went again within 1 hour, but this time the dor open dash light stayed off as well. The fuse had gone again. I've replaced the fuse a few times since aftyer trying various fixes around the interior light, but it always blows again quickly.

Oddly the key will only unlock the drivers door, but will activate the central locking when locking.

Only today I managed to get the old VAGCOM onto it and noted that I was getting a 01330 code, but I think this is more to do with the blown fuse to the central convenience unit than anything else?

So to recap, put in a new fuse and everything works, so it must be an unearthed circut on the locking that's blowing the fuse and throwing everything else off?

Plan A is to strip down the driver's side door switches and see if there is any water or corrosion. If not that I have read that the mircroswitch that activates the door open instruction can go west and needs a dousing in WD40.

Unless that is someone has a better idea??

Many thanks,

I would suggest an earthing fault / short, probably in the loom between the car and the drivers door. Check for split insulation on the wires in that area.

the micro switch for the door open signal tends to "stop working" as the pin that contacts with the lock snaps off. so the lights wont come on etc. your symptoms sound like the convenience unit/wiring wet or broken

This thread may help you. I created a guide for stripping down the door to get to the lock mechanism and repair or replace the microswitch.

Sourced a new locking mechanism for the car and fitted it yesterday. Same problem persists.

But, persevered and have now noted the following:

When i replace fuse 14 and everything works ok, the door open and interior light didn't come on when the driver's door was open. All others are ok.

I also had my remote locking, windows and roof back.

However after 24 hours I've noted the following:

First thing to go was the roof.

Followed a couple of hours later by the windows.

Followed by the interior light.

When the windows went, the door open light came on the dash again.

It was only then I noticed that the remote locking was gone as well.

My mind is turning to either a short on the interior light/door open fuse 14? Or the central convenience unit is throwing a wobby?

Answers on a postcard please?

Also, if anyone knows the part number for the central convenience unti for an 02 reg 4x4 estate?

I should add that when I had the door stripped down I also checked the door CCU, it was clean and dry with no broken connections.

I also checked as much of the wiring as I could, including peeling back the cover where the loom goes in through the door and I couldn't visually find any signs of worn or broken wires.

I didn't get a chance to get the VAG-COM on whilst I had temporarily fixed the windows/doors/remote locking. But I do plan on getting some more 10a fuses and getting on with it soon.

I may be wrong, but I had assumed that the VAG-COM would give a false report if all the other items were not working as well.

Cheers.
